Dr. Jake Higgins is a two-time graduate of UK College of Nursing (BSN 2012, PhD 2019). His clinical and research interests surround the trauma patient population; specifically, he is interested in understanding how hospitalization impacts the trajectory of functional and emotional recovery in patients after major injury. Additionally, he is interested in mitigation of hospital-associated complications in patients after injury. His doctoral work was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, which in conjunction with UK College of Nursing, named him as a Future of Nursing Scholar. In his faculty appointment, as an Assistant Professor, Dr. Higgins teaches Evidence-Based Practice/Research in the undergraduate program and co-directs the Undergraduate Nursing Research Internship. He is jointly appointed at UK HealthCare as a Nurse Scientist on the Trauma-Surgical Service Line. This role allows Dr. Higgins to remain actively engaged in clinical practice through facilitation of research, evidence-based, and quality improvement projects with clinical nurses caring for the trauma-surgical patient population. Dr. Higgins is active in the Society of Trauma Nurses, Delta Psi of Sigma, the Southern Nursing Research Society, and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
