Mary Long
Academic Advisor
Mary grew up in California as the child of working-class immigrants and was the first in her family to pursue higher education. She earned a bachelor's in Biology from Brigham Young University–Hawaii and later completed her teaching credentials. Mary taught middle school science and special education before transitioning to adult education, where she developed a passion for higher education as she helped adult learners navigate their academic paths and overcome challenges. She later earned a master’s in Counseling with a career specialization from Sacramento State. Her professional experience includes working in the TRiO program, where she served as a counselor assisting first-generation students and students with disabilities in successfully transitioning into college and achieving their academic and career goals.
Outside of work, Mary enjoys spending time with her husband and two children. She enjoys baking and trying new recipes, playing board games, listening to podcasts, and volunteering by baking cakes for at-risk and underserved youth.
