Purpose

  • Provides leadership, coordination, and advocacy for staff within the College of Nursing. 
  • It serves as the primary staff governance and advisory body, promoting communication, collaboration, and continuous improvement of administrative and operational functions. 
  • The Council ensures staff perspectives are considered in decision-making and supports a positive, inclusive, and efficient work environment.

Membership

  • Seven staff members representing a broad range of functional areas (e.g., academic support, student services, administration, research support, IT, and clinical operations). 
  • Members must be employed in a full-time, part-time, or temporary (STEPS) position. 
  • This includes staff who are externally paid employees (i.e., contract/academic advisors) and employees whose primary assignment and work responsibilities are performed within the College of Nursing. 
    • Note: STEPS employees may run for Staff Council at any time with the written permission of their supervisor or administrator. 
    • Note: Only staff who are no longer in their probationary period (i.e., the first 90 days of employment) are eligible to run. 
  • Ex-officio:
    • The Dean or a designated administrator shall serve to provide support and guidance.
    • Executive Faculty Council Chair 
    • Ad hoc members or liaisons may be invited to participate in specific initiatives or discussions as needed.

Functions

  1. Serve as a representative voice for staff in matters affecting workplace
    culture, operations, and staff development.
  2. Advise College leadership on staff-related policies, procedures, and strategic
    initiatives.
  3. Facilitate communication between staff and administration regarding
    organizational updates, changes, and priorities.
  4. Identify and address operational challenges, proposing solutions that
    improve efficiency, workflow, and service delivery.
  5. Promote staff recognition, engagement, and professional development
    opportunities.
  6. Support onboarding, training, and retention efforts for staff across the
    College.
  7. Coordinate with faculty and student councils, as appropriate, to support
    shared goals and initiatives.
  8. Maintain minutes, communicate regularly with staff constituents, and report
    recommendations to the Dean or designee.
