Assistant Professor, PMHNP Track Coordinator
Dr. Andrew Makowski is a board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner and Coordinator of the PMHNP track within the DNP program at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. He is a clinical leader, educator, and scholar dedicated to advancing interprofessional mental healthcare through innovative practice, education and collaborative EBPQI and research.
Dr. Makowski offers an integrated psychiatric-mental health clinic within UK HealthCare’s Team Blue Primary Care Clinic, enhancing access to timely mental health services for employees and their families. This collaborative effort is developing an interprofessional equine-assisted healthcare clinic and a post-professional certificate program to train providers across disciplines. In addition to clinical service and certificate program development, the project includes integrated EBP, QI, and research efforts to evaluate outcomes and inform best practices in the delivery of equine-assisted care for both humans and horses.
Dr. Makowski is also actively engaged in several research initiatives including evaluating the expansion of tele-mental health services across behavioral health settings and assessing the impact of long-acting injectables on psychiatric outcomes among Medicaid beneficiaries.
Dr. Makowski has received numerous honors, including the 2024 UK HealthCare–UK College of Nursing Academic-Clinical Engagement Award, the 2024 UK College of Nursing Excellence in Graduate Education Award, and first place in Practice at the 2024 American Psychiatric Nurses Association Annual Conference for his mentorship of a DNP student and interprofessional team treating adolescent eating disorders.
