CONAA Honors Two UK College of Nursing Alumni

Two outstanding UK College of Nursing Alumni were honored at the College of Nursing Alumni Association luncheon on October 14. Dr. Jake Higgins was the recipient of the First Decade Award and Ms. Delanor Manson was the recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus Award. Dr. Higgins received a BSN in 2012 and a PhD in 2019 from UK and is currently an assistant professor in the College of Nursing as well as nurse scientist with UK HealthCare.

A nurse in every school

Pictured above is UK College of Nursing alumni and 2019 Kentucky Nurse of the Year Eva Stone, DNP, APRN  Many of us can remember a time when every school—elementary, middle and high school— had a school nurse who looked after students during the school day. School nurses cared for sick children and tended to playground scrapes and bruises. But after decades of budget cuts and changes in Medicaid funding, many schools have lost their nurses.

With deep gratitude and appreciation for leading change, the University of Kentucky College of Nursing is proud to honor the first African American graduates in each of its nursing degree programs.  These “Fabulous 5” graduates are trailblazers at the College of Nursing—each going on to excel and affect change in nursing and healthcare.  In the fight for equity and racial justice, the Fab 5 are an inspiration for future generations of all students of color.

UK CON Alumni named Dean of University of Utah College of Nursing

Marla De Jong, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, Colonel (Ret.), a UK College of Nursing alumni and lifelong leader in the field of nursing, has been named dean of the University of Utah College of Nursing effective August 17. De Jong will oversee the undergraduate and graduate programs of the college, with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching, research, clinical practice, and service.
