BREATHE Participates in the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health

The College of Nursing's BREATHE team will participate in the 17th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) through a televised program about their major tobacco control and health activities with research, community engagement and empowerment, advocacy at the local and state levels and access to health services.

The Coalition for Smoke Free Tomorrow is holding a news conference Tuesday in Frankfort. They said nearly 21 percent of Kentucky women smoke during pregnancy, which is more than two-and-a-half times the national rate. The group argues raising cigarette taxes is a proven way to reduce smoking. The Senate Health and Welfare Committee voted last week to recommend the tax increase. But right now there's no bill for the committee. Kentucky's current cigarette tax is $0.60 a pack, which is one of the lowest in the nation.

BREATHE Helps Teens Advocate for Tobacco-Free Communities

UK's Bridging Research Efforts and Advocacy Toward Healthy Environments (BREATHE) team recently partnered with Youth Empowered Solutions (YES) to host tobacco and youth advocacy training for leadership students of Hazard High School, as well as a training session for adult community advocates from around the state on the importance of youth empowerment and mentorship and how to engage youth in advocacy efforts.

UK Tobacco Treatment Specialist Training Program Receives Accreditation

The University of Kentucky College of Nursing’s BREATHE Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training program received accreditation from the Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP) on Aug. 16.
