The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Nursing recently honored UK College of Nursing Associate Professor and PhD Program Director Susan Frazier, PhD, RN, FAHA, with the Mildred E. Newton Distinguished Educator Award.

Nominated by Debra Moser, DNSc, RN, professor and Gill Endowed Chair of Nursing, the award recognizes a current or former educator or dean of a national college of nursing who graduated from the OSU College of Nursing and whose personal integrity and commitment to nursing education, advancement of nursing science through research and publications or exemplary practice of nursing contributes significantly to the recruitment and preparation of the next generation of nurses.

“Her commitment to excellence in education is evident every day in the quality of her teaching and mentorship, her development of exceptional learning opportunities, her support of the graduate program as a committee member and chair and now as the director of the PhD program,” says Debra Moser, DNSc, RN, professor and Gill Endowed Chair of Nursing at the UK College of Nursing.

Dr. Frazier earned her BSN, MS and PhD in nursing from OSU.  She practiced as a certified critical care nurse (CCRN) for nearly 20 years prior to earning her graduate degrees. After working as a faculty member at OSU, she joined the UK College of Nursing in the fall of 2005 as an associate professor and codirector for the RICH Heart Program.

Her research program focuses on cardiopulmonary responses to critical illness, in particular with patients requiring mechanical ventilation. Her published work can be found in a number of high impact, peer-reviewed journals, including the American Journal of Critical Care, Heart & Lunch, Biological Research for Nursing and more. This past year, she successfully competed for new funding for PhD students from the “Future of Nursing Robert Wood Johnson” mechanism and the “Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholar Program,” that will serve to attract high-quality, driven PhD students.

"Dr. Frazier's has guided and mentored countless students in their journeys to gain research expertise and we are lucky to have her with us," says Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.

Dr. Frazier will accept the award at a ceremony at Red Brick Occasions on Sept. 30 from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m.
