RUHRC celebrates nearly 10,000 publication downloads
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 23, 2021) -- This month the Rural & Underserved Health Research Center (RUHRC) celebrates nearly 10,000 all-time downloads of their policy briefs since first publishing in October 2017.
RUHRC's research addresses a variety of public health and health care issues affecting rural communities—including primary care, substance use and treatment, and mental health treatment. Their publications have been downloaded across the country and the globe.
The top three most-downloaded RUHRC publications in the past year include:
- Rural/Urban Disparities in Utilization of Medical Nutrition Therapy to the Fee-for-Service Medicare Population
- Major Depression, Treatment Receipt, and Treatment Sources among Non-Metropolitan and Metropolitan Adults
- Rural/Urban Disparities in Utilization of Diabetes Self-Management Training to the Fee-for-Service Medicare Population
The top three most-downloaded RUHRC publications of all time are:
- Illicit Drug and Opioid Use Disorders among Non-Metropolitan Residents
- Update: Rural/Urban Disparities in Pneumococcal Vaccine Service Delivery Among the Fee-for-Service Medicare Population, 2012-2015
- Rural Family Physicians Have a Broader Scope of Practice than Urban Family Physicians
The RUHRC is led by director Dr. Ty Borders, who is a faculty member in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing.

The Rural & Underserved Health Research Center (RUHRC) focuses on issues at the intersection of rurality and poverty. RUHRC research focuses on subjects including but not limited to access to health care, substance use disorder and treatment, mental illness and treatment, and cancer. RUHRC researchers are multidisciplinary, with faculty from the UK Colleges of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Communication and Information as well as the American Board of Family Medicine.
