Stacy Stanifer, PhD, APRN, AOCNS
Assistant Professor
Stacy R. Stanifer, PhD, APRN, AOCNS®, is an Assistant Professor in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and a member of the BREATHE research team. She is also a member of the Markey Cancer Center Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program and the Lung Cancer Translational Research Group at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center. Dr. Stanifer serves as Co-Leader of the Community Engagement Core for the University of Kentucky Center for Appalachian Research in Environmental Sciences (UK-CARES), an NIEHS-funded Environmental Health Sciences Core Center, and Director of the Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing Core for the Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center (CARERC).
Dr. Stanifer earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Kentucky in 2001, her Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Louisville in 2009, and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Kentucky in 2020. An Advanced Oncology Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist with more than two decades of oncology nursing experience, she is dedicated to advancing evidence-based cancer prevention and improving outcomes for individuals and communities at risk for environmentally related cancers.
Her research focuses on reducing environmental risk factors for cancer, particularly residential radon exposure and the effects of extreme weather events on cancer outcomes. She leads community-engaged research to increase radon awareness, testing, mitigation, and policy adoption, with a particular emphasis on reducing lung cancer disparities in rural and Appalachian communities. More recently, her work has expanded to examine disaster preparedness and continuity of cancer care during extreme weather events. Dr. Stanifer is also committed to translating research into practice through community partnerships and evidence-informed public health policy.
Dr. Stanifer is an active member of the Oncology Nursing Society, the Bluegrass Oncology Nursing Society, the American Nurses Association, the Kentucky Nurses Association, and serves on the Kentucky Board of Radon Safety.
