College of Nursing Professor Receives Excellence in Teamwork Award

  College of Nursing Professor Deborah Reed, PhD, MSPH, RN, FAAOHN, FAAN, accepted the first pace in Excellence in Teamwork Award alongside Rita Stewart, FCS Agent for Lincoln Country, UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment, as well as Jill Harris, president of the Kentucky Extension Association of Family Consumer Sciences (KEAFCS).

Associate Professor Receives Florence Nightingale Award for Nursing Excellence

Leslie Scott, PhD, APRN, PPCNP-BC, CDE, MLDE, associate professor, recently received the 2018 Florence Nightingale Award Nursing Excellence on November 8, 2018 in Louisville, Kentucky, for her outstanding contributions to advance health and wellness with diabetic youth at Camp Hendon, a week-long summer camp in rural Kentucky that annually impacts over 150 children ages 8-17 with type 1 diabetes.

Assistant Professor Awarded Grant from UKCON Office of Nursing Research

Jean Edward, PhD, RN, CHPE, assistant professor, was recently selected as an awardee of the UK College of Nursing Office of Nursing Research (ONR) Pilot Funding Program. Through the support of the ONR's $15,000 grant, Dr. Edward will be able to continue to build her program of research by "Examining Availability of Health System and Community-Based Programs Aimed at Promoting Health Insurance Literacy and Informed Healthcare Decision Making Among Rural Appalachian Consumers."

Associate Professor Receives Grant from UKCON Office of Nursing Research

Martha Biddle, PhD, APRN, CCNS, FAHA, associate professor, was recently selected as an awardee of the UK College of Nursing Office of Nursing Research (ONR) Pilot Funding Program. Through the support of the ONR's $17,000 grant, Dr. Biddle will be able to continue to build her program of research through a "Dietary Intervention to Reduce Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Persons with  Metabolic Syndrome."

Dr. Deborah Reed Honored as American Academy of Nursing Edge Runner for Work with Kentucky's Farmers

  Deborah Reed, PhD, MSPH, RN, FAAOHN, FAAN, Distinguished Service Professor and Good Samaritan Endowed Chair, was honored with the Edge Runner Award from the American Academy of Nursing for her work educating farmers about occupational health, safety and disease prevention on farms.

Associate Professor Receives 2018 Dickinson Wright Nurse of the Year at MediStar Awards

Leslie Scott, PhD, APRN, PPCNP-BC, CDE, MLDE, associate professor, was selected as the 2018 Dickinson Wright Nurse of the Year and was recognized on Tuesday, October 30, at the Muhammad Ali Center in Louisville, Ky. Since 2007, IGE Media, publisher of Medical News, has recognized excellence in the business of healthcare at the exclusive MediStar Awards, which honors seven healthcare professionals for their achievements in advocacy, innovation, education, leadership, aging care, as well as announces the physician and nurse of the year.

Teaching Spotlight: Tammy Courtney & Carole Haurylko

  “Being so hands-on in the classroom has taken our student-teacher relationship to the next level. Everyone truly enjoys each other’s company, and the friendly environment stimulates exceptional growth in our students,” says Tammy Courtney, MSN, RN, CNE. Courtney and Carole Haurylko, BSN, RN, are two of three faculty members who teach the lab portion of NUR 201: Assessment and Health Promotion Across the Lifespan. Tricia Rogers (not pictured), MS, RN, rounds out the trio, who work hard on a daily basis to ensure the success of their students.

Faculty Spotlight: Kacy Allen-Bryant

  By Tassy Taylor At only 2 years old, Kacy Allen-Bryant, MSN, MPH, RN, lecturer, lovingly tended to her grandmother’s ankle injury. As a teen, she helped her grandmother care for newborns recently discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). As a student, Kacy Allen-Bryant always excelled in science and math, and she eagerly participated in extracurricular activities that exposed her to STEM professions. She always knew nursing was in her DNA, and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was calling her name.

Katie Voigts Named DREAM Scholar

Katie Voigts, BSN, RN, PhD student at the UK College of Nursing, was recently named a 2018 Disparities Researchers Equalizing Access for Minorities (DREAM) Scholar, supported by the College of Nursing, Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET).

Associate Professor Elected to Serve on AACN Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)

Evelyn Parrish, PhD, APRN-BC, associate professor and director of Accreditation & Strategic Outcomes as well as DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Track co-coordinator, was elected to serve on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) board as a member of the Nominating Committee.
