Dr. Carol Thompson Named Master of Critical Care Medicine in Society of Critical Care Medicine

Carol Thompson, PhD, DNP, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC, FCCM, FAANP, FAAN, professor and assistant dean of MSN & DNP Program Studies, will now have the highest honor bestowed in the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) as a Master of Critical Care Medicine (MCCM).

Dr. Karen Butler Elected to American Public Health Association

Karen Butler, DNP, RN, professor and assistant dean of Academic Operations, was recently elected to the American Public Health Association (APHA) as a section counselor for Public Health Nursing.  "It is always an honor and great for the College of Nursing when our faculty are elected for national executive leadership positions," says Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, FNAP, FAANP, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.

Dr. Amanda Fallin-Bennett Receives MERIT Award from National Cancer Institute

Amanda Fallin-Bennett, PhD, RN, assistant professor, has received a MERIT award (R37) from the National Cancer Institute in recognition of her R01 grant submission entitled "Adoption of Smoke-free Laws and Voluntary Policies in Rural Communities in Southern States." Smoking remains high in America’s rural southern population, and the gap in smoking prevalence between rural and urban residents is growing.

Dr. Sheila Melander Selected as 2018 Wharton-AACN Fellow

  Sheila Melander, PhD, APRN, ACNP-BC, FCCM, FAANP, FAAN, associate dean of MSN and DNP Faculty Affairs & Practice, was selected as a Wharton-AACN Fellow in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, August 6-9, 2018. Offered by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, the four-day Executive Leadership Program is taught by Wharton faculty, who present relevant and timely content designed to advance chief academic administrators to a higher level of leadership.

Assistant Professor Receives Grant from the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant Review Committee

Jean Edward PhD, RN, assistant professor, recently received an internal award from the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant Review Committee entitled “Examining the Relationship between Financial Toxicity, Cost-Related Health Literacy and Access to Cancer Care for Colorectal Cancer Survivors in Kentucky.”

Associate Professor Shows Kids with Diabetes How to Be Kids

When Leslie Scott was a little girl, she watched as her mother struggled with the challenges associated with type 1 diabetes. Not just managing the disease, which involves regular blood sugar checks and insulin injections, but rather handling the stigmas and misconceptions people have about diabetes. "She wasn't allowed to participate in things because of her disease, and I saw the impact it had on her," said Scott, UK pediatric nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator. "I didn't want that to happen to anyone anymore."

Dr. Ellen Hahn Receives Grant from Kentucky Department for Public Health

Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, and her team recently received a two-year, $310,361 funding from the Kentucky Department for Public Health for their Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy. The funds will be used to provide technical assistance and training to communities on smoke-free policies, including assessing community readiness, develop strategic plans, preparing fact sheets and one-pagers for the dissemination of scientific information, and assisting with local policy education campaigns related to reducing exposure on secondhand smoke. 

Professor, Assistant Professor Receive Award from National Institute on Drug Abuse

Kristin Ashford, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC, FAAN, professor, and Amanda Fallin-Bennett, PhD, RN, assistant professor, received an R34 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse  entitled “Behavioral and Enhanced Perinatal Intervention for Cessation (B-EPIC): Reducing Tobacco use among Opioid Addicted Women.”
