UK College of Nursing Celebrates 50 Years of the Nurse Practitioner Profession

Fifty years ago, the first nurse practitioners program was established at the University of Colorado. Today, more than 205,000 nurse practitioners are licensed to practice in United States. The University of Kentucky College of Nursing joins the nation in marking 50 years of the nurse practitioner profession during National Nurse Practitioners Week, Nov. 8-14. The college offers a doctor of nursing practice program, which prepares nurse practitioners to design, implement, manage, evaluate and lead health care delivery systems at the highest level.

Med/Vet-to-BSN Option Now Offered at the College of Nursing

A new Med/Vet-to-BSN Option is now being offered at the College of Nursing thanks to Assistant Professor Frances Hardin-Fanning, PhD, RN, who received a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for military veterans interested in nursing careers.

First Class of Advanced Practice Nurses Complete Certificate Program through UK-Norton Healthcare Academic Partnership

7/6/2015 – The UK College of Nursing and Louisville’s Norton Healthcare celebrated the first class of board certified nurse practitioners to complete additional competency-based education through a landmark academic-practice partnership on July 1 2015. The UK College of Nursing‐Norton Healthcare Academic Partnership allows Norton Healthcare nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing the opportunity to earn their Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification or Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification.

2/5/2015  – Last February, more than 500 of today’s leading nurse scientists, and those studying to become tomorrow’s, gathered in San Antonio, for the prestigious Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS) conference. Nursing researchers from across the 14-state SNRS region came to participate in panel discussions, present scholarly papers and discuss their work with colleagues and peers. Students in nursing research, primarily doctoral students, presented their own studies at the conference and were recognized with awards for their work. 

Grant Will Help Veterans With Military Medical Training Transition Into Civilian Nursing Careers

12/4/2014 – Dr. Fran Hardin-Fanning, associate professor at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, recently received a $627,000 Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to advance a project to prepare veterans for the civilian nursing workforce by establishing the Med/Vet to BSN option at the UK College of Nursing.

The stigma of mental illness is beginning to be overcome, and research is beginning to outline the severity of the connection between mental and physical health. There is a movement toward recovery-focused care in which the whole person is treated and not merely the symptoms. Nursing is key to this holistic, team-centered approach to patient care.
