College of Nursing PhD Students Publish Health Policy Article on Kentucky Bill HB 98
UK College of Nursing PhD students Amanda Culp-Roche, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, and Adebola Adegboyega, BSN, RN, recently had their article titled “Analysis of Kentucky’s Law Protecting the Rights of Schoolchildren with Type I Diabetes Mellitus: Application of Kingdon’s Policy Stream Model” published by SAGE Journals.
The article took nearly one year to publish and analyzes Kentucky Bill HB 98 which allows unlicensed school personnel to give insulin to children with diabetes in Kentucky schools. It covers potential policy alternatives and discusses the implications for nursing practice. Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN, served as Culp-Roche’s and Adegboyega’s mentor during their article submission and revision processes.
“As top nurse researchers and leaders, Bola and Amanda should be proud of themselves,” said Dr. Hahn. “Their research is instrumental in administering safe diabetes care for children in schools that will improve their well-being long-term as well as encourage optimal academic performance.”
Culp-Roche and Adegboyega combined their comprehensive manuscript after realizing they had the similar topics for their policy papers in Dr. Hahn’s class.
“My paper for Dr. Hahn’s policy class focused on helping individuals with type 2 diabetes in rural areas manage their illness,” said Culp-Roche. “I have an interest in helping individuals with diabetes and school health, and it fit the bill.”
Culp-Roche, from Centerville, Pa., obtained her BSN from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and plans to continue to practice as a family nurse practitioner as well as teach future nurses. Adegboyega, a Nigerian-American and a BSN to PhD student, hopes to continue to impact public health and improve health outcomes through additional research upon graduation.
