Yellow Tulips author Helen Joy George was the featured guest speaker for the College of Nursing's annual staff and faculty retreat, held virtually Aug. 7.  George spoke about her book, a memoir of her journey coping with bipolar disorder through an unusual childhood, a mental breakdown at age 31 and how she fought for a year to stay alive in the mental health system.

"Helen is an important and courageous voice in helping others understand bipolar disorder by sharing her deeply personal experiences and perspective on the disease," said College of Nursing Dean Janie Heath.  "We're fortunate to have her insight help guide us in improving the way we teach and treat mental health and illness. Many times, mental illness is not perceived to be as urgent or authentic as physical illness and as healthcare educators and providers we must continue to work to fight against that stigma in diagnosis, treatment and every day life."
