Debra Moser, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, professor, assistant dean of PhD Program & Scholarly Affairs & Linda C. Gill Endowed Chair of Nursing, presented her PCORI study, “Reducing Health Disparities in Appalachians with Multiple Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors”, to Maryland Senator Chris Van Hollen and other panelists, including the president of the American Heart Association, on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, June 26.

Dr. Evelyn Parrish Becomes First Psych-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in KY Inducted into American Association of Nurse Practitioners

Evelyn Parrish, PhD, PMHNP-BC, FAANP, associate professor, director of Accreditation & Strategic Outcomes and DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Track co-coordinator, was inducted as a fellow into the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Friday, June 21.  This year's AANP annual conference theme was Keeping Health Care on Track. Attendees had access to 400 educational sessions and workshops and unparalleled networking opportunities.

Dr. Misook Chung Hosts 2nd Global Korean Nursing Foundation-USA Leadership Program

Dr. Misook Chung, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, professor, hosted the 2nd Global Korean Nursing Foundation (GKNF)-USA Leadership Program at the University of Kentucky Gatton Student Center, June 14-15, 2019.  “This conference is devoted to build a bridge for early career Korean nurses to advance their career in academia, health care systems, and other health related fields, ultimately taking on greater leadership roles,” says Kunsook Bernstein, PhD, RN, PMHNP-BC, FAAN, president of GKNF-USA.

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Lovoria Williams

Growing up the daughter of a tobacco farmer in Christian County, Kentucky, Dr. Lovoria Williams witnessed many behaviors that are indicative of Kentucky’s health disparities. She also observed the power of health ministries in churches, as her mother was a gospel singer who traveled the state singing in congregations. This combination of childhood experiences informed her desire to be a nurse from a young age.

One confessed a fear he’d been keeping private: His father had Alzheimer’s, and after decades of rising with the sun, walking out to the fields, and climbing aboard his tractor, he couldn’t be persuaded to stop. Even though he didn’t have keys, he could still get hurt. The son fretted. “I’m worried I won’t see him out there when I’m working and will run him over.”
