Nursing Student Discovers Her Specialty During Shoulder to Shoulder Medical Brigade

  University of Kentucky College of Nursing student Mia Jackson discovered her passion for working with children during her experience abroad with the Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG) health brigade. Jackson and 40 other health professionals, students and faculty shared this transformational experience in Ecuador.

Student Spotlight: Gabbie Innocent, BSN Student

  Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Gabbie Innocent, a sophomore in the traditional BSN program, always craved adrenaline. Her intent was to pursue a career as a paramedic, but she found shortly after coming to UK that nursing not only offers the same rush, but also a different experience every day—a break from the normal routine. “I just knew an everyday job wasn’t for me ever since I was young. But I knew I wanted to do something medical and help others,” explains Innocent.

DNP Student Awarded Saha Cardiovascular Research Award

The Saha Cardiovascular Research Center recently announced DNP student Joy Coles, BSN, RN, a recipient of the 2017 Saha Awards. These annual awards are given to medical and nursing students as well as to a nurse educator. They are designed to reward creativity, dedication and knowledge in areas of cardiovascular research, disease prevention and patient education.

College of Nursing Students Receive Lyman T. Johnson Torch of Excellence, Torch Bearer Awards

The University of Kentucky Alumni Association’s Lyman T. Johnson Constituency Group awarded undergraduate nursing student Mia Jackson and DNP student Joy Coles, BSN, RN, the Torch Bearer and Torch of Excellence Awards at its 27thAnnual Homecoming Awards Celebration at the UK Alumni House. The event recognizes deserving African American alumni, faculty, staff and students who exemplify the passion and courage exhibited by Lyman T. Johnson as he led the racial desegregation efforts at UK more than 60 years ago. Congratulations to our oustanding students!  

College of Nursing Student Finds Nursing Through Area Health Education Center Summer Health Career Camp

  As the demand for baccalaureate- and doctorally-prepared nurses steadily rises across health care systems, the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Pipeline Program is working to positively affect the distribution and increase the number of health care providers in the Commonwealth. The program, established in 2005, places students interested in pursuing careers in health professions alongside clinicians in rural and underserved communities.

  Five University of Kentucky College of Nursing students traveled to Santo Domingo, Ecuador, through Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG), an official campus organization celebrating ten years of engaging academic and community partners in improving the health and well-being of impoverished and underserved communities.

Following Father's Example, UK Nursing Student Donates a Kidney to Save a Life

  To commit a textbook term to memory, UK College of Nursing student Karly Schmidt used a mental shortcut by naming her two kidneys George and Fred. George, her right kidney, reminded her of the word “glomerular,” and Fred, her left kidney, reminded her of “filtration.” Putting the two words together, she could recall the glomerular filtration rate, which is the medical formula used to measure kidney function.

  The College of Nursing held its semiannual Hooding Ceremony on Friday, May 5 at the Singletary Center for the Arts. Congratulations to all of our graduates!

Honor Society of Nursing Inducts Record Number of College of Nursing Students at 40th Annual Ceremony

  The Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Delta Psi Chapter inducted a record number of students from the UK College of Nursing at the 40th annual induction ceremony and brunch reception on Sunday, April 23. Eighty-nine students from the College were inducted, including 21 doctoral students, five RN-BSN students and 63 traditional or second degree students.
