College of Nursing Student Bikes 1,000 Miles with Family, Raises $17,115 for Children in Syria

  When College of Nursing junior Maya Husayni’s father asked if she wanted to bike 1,000 miles to raise money for the children of Syria, she didn’t hesitate to say yes. The Husaynis set up a donation page for friends and family to donate to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a UN program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It aids children of Syria by providing access to drinking water, vaccinations, education, psychological support and winter supplies.

DNP student Sooksai Kaewbua, BSN, is one of 15 graduate nursing students in the nation to be selected as an American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Board of Directors Student Scholar for 2016. She will present her abstract titled “Healthy Heart, Healthy Brain: An Innovative Game to Improve Mental Health by Preventing Cardiovascular Disease” at the APNA 30th Annual Conference in October in Hartford, Ct. in addition to receiving a complimentary membership in the organization for one year.

Two College of Nursing Students Selected as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars

  College of Nursing PhD students Jessica Harman, BSN, RN, CCRN and Sara Duggan, BSN, RN, TNCC, were selected by Susan Frazier, PhD, RN, FAHA associate professor and PhD program director, as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing Scholars for the next three years. The Foundation’s award of $150,000 will support the tuition, stipend, living expenses and fees for the two scholars who will begin their PhD programs in September 2016.

The College of Nursing Mourns Loss of Student Leader: Shayn Elexendere

  Just four days before MedVet-to-BSN student Shayn Elexendere was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident, he held a College-wide “thank you” for two custodians with help from his classmate and friend Neal Harrod, a traditional BSN student. “It’s a testament to his character. Shayn was a very special guy and an amazing friend. I was truly blessed to call myself his friend,” says Harrod.
