Clinical Nursing Specialist Student Uses Training to Reduce Patient Stress at Markey

  By Elizabeth Adams Five weeks at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center seemed like an eternity for bone marrow transplant recipient Earl Harris. Two days after he started the treatment, his 91-year-old mother died, and the demands of the transplantation process meant he couldn’t attend her funeral. As days of inpatient treatment turned into weeks, the bus driver who transports special needs children to school in Jefferson County was anxious to return to his bus route — and his golf clubs.

College of Nursing Assistant Research Professor and UK Student Help Launch Citywide Substance Abuse Resource

By Elizabeth Adams When an individual with a substance abuse disorder reaches out for help, the opportunity for intervention is transient. “That moment when somebody is willing to go to treatment is actually a very fleeting moment in time,” said Alex Elswick, a University of Kentucky graduate student who is in long-term recovery from heroin addiction. 

College of Nursing Students Competed in Second Annual Global Health Case Competition

  Two undergraduate students and three DNP students at the UK College of Nursing recently competed in the second annual Global Health Case Competition (GHCC) hosted by the UK Global Health Initiative at the College of Pharmacy on Sat., Feb. 27. A total of twelve interdisciplinary student teams representing 15 different colleges developed strategies to address different ways to combat childhood obesity in Mexico. Among the participants from the College of Nursing were:

UK College of Nursing PhD students Amanda Culp-Roche, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC, and Adebola Adegboyega, BSN, RN, recently had their article titled “Analysis of Kentucky’s Law Protecting the Rights of Schoolchildren with Type I Diabetes Mellitus: Application of Kingdon’s Policy Stream Model” published by SAGE Journals. 

College of Nursing Senior Dances For the Kids as DanceBlue Family Relations Chair

  College of Nursing senior Drew Walls will dance his way through his last semester as family relations chair for DanceBlue, a year-long, student-run fundraiser culminating in a 24-hour dance marathon, which has raised more than $8 million for the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic since 2006.

DNP Student Honors Son Through Suicidology Research and #DoItForChase

  By Sally Evans On October 16, 2013, College of Nursing DNP student Nicki Sullivan lost her 12-year-old son, Chase Whatley, to suicide. Wanting to honor Chase’s life, Sullivan, 39, received her BSN in August of 2014 and entered the DNP program that fall. “I thought this was the best way to do something productive,” Sullivan said. “I needed to figure out a way to channel the wealth of knowledge and resources I had into something I could use to help people.”

College of Nursing Student-Athlete Makes USA National Coed Cheerleading Team

  Whether it be halftime at a University of Kentucky basketball game or a day off from class, undergraduate nursing senior and UK cheerleader Emily Sawyer studies every second she gets.   Sawyer, from Lexington, always dreamed of attending UK and was inspired to apply for nursing school following her mother and grandmother who were also nurses. Sawyer’s mother, who worked in obstetrics (OB) at UK, struggled with addiction and recently finished rehab.
