College of Nursing PhD Student Receives Baptist Health Fellowship

College of Nursing PhD student Andrew Bugajski received the Fellowship in Nursing Research from Baptist Health to advance its effort in creating a team of young PhD students interested in conducting research. Bugajski, a 23 year-old from Cincinnati, received his BSN from the UK College of Nursing in December of 2014 and currently works in the Medicine West ICU at UK while working toward his PhD in nursing.

College of Nursing Doctoral Student Receives competitive research award from Delta Psi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International

Tracey Vitori, MSN, MS, M.Ed, APRN, doctoral candidate, received a competitive research award from Delta Psi chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International for $1500 to support her dissertation research. The purpose of this study, titled the “Association of psychological distress to surgical outcomes and quality of life in patients and their caregivers after cardiac surgery”,  is to evaluate the association of patient and caregiver psychological state (anxiety, depression, hostility) with quality of life in both patient and caregiver, and postoperative complications after cardiac surgery.

Isaac Jones’s first deployment was in 2009, and as the only medic in his unit, he conducted more than 300 missions—more than anyone else on his team. Now, Jones is using these experiences to fuel his education in becoming a nurse right here at the UK College of Nursing.

UK Lyman T. Johnson Constituency Group Awards Nursing Students Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer Awards

The University of Kentucky Lyman T. Johnson Constituency Group awarded College of Nursing PhD student Kacy Allen-Bryant and undergraduate student Keelie Dyson the Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer Awards Fri., Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. during the 25th Annual Homecoming Awards Celebration. The reception commemorated the 66th year of an African American presence on UK’s campus and took pace at the UK Alumni House.

UK Nursing Student's Board Game Prompts Patients to Choose Heart-Healthy Foods

Using the facility’s intercom, she and fellow nursing staff members in the geriatric unit recruit the first few players to get the game rolling.

Adebola Adegboyega, a BSN-PhD student from Nigeria, published a research review, titled "Unequal Access: African Immigrants and American Health Care,” in the current issue of Kentucky Nurse, the official publication of the Kentucky Nurses Association.

Nursing Student Receives Eleanor M. Stone Scholarship for Continuing Education

College of Nursing undergraduate student Brittany U’Wren received the Eleanor M. Stone Scholarship for Continuing Education after providing direct care for Eleanor Stone, a resident of Wesley Village Senior Living Community in Wilmore who passed away in January 2014. Stone’s family was so inspired by the hard work of U’Wren, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Wesley Village, and her colleagues, that they started the scholarship fund in honor of their mother to assist a CNA in attaining a higher level of education.

College of Nursing Students Receive 2015 Saha Awards

The University of Kentucky Saha Cardiovascular Research Center has selected four students committed to futures in cardiovascular health as the recipients of the 2015 Saha Awards for Cardiovascular Research and Education. Two of the recipients are students in the College of Nursing.

Nursing students behind installation of AED

Two undergraduate nursing students’ personal experiences with cardiac health inspired recent installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the third floor of the Nursing Building. UK seniors Jeffrey Key and Kaitlin Voigts submitted a proposal for the AED as a result of experiencing incidents of cardiac arrest. Key was in sixth grade when he found his neighbor suffering a heart attack near a high school. Thanks to the high school’s AED and fast interventions, his neighbor survived.

Christa Cabot, a BSN senior and diver on UK’s swim team, was named as a Scholar All-American

Record-setting academic honors continue to come in for the Kentucky swimming and diving team following a 2014-15 season that was equally as impressive in the competition pool. Last week, 14 Wildcats were named Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The most Scholar All-Americans in a single season in program history, the 14 UK student-athletes recognized includes 10 first-team selections, also a UK record. It tops the eight CSCAA Scholar All-Americans from a year ago and beats the 11 in 2011, the previous high.
