College of Nursing undergraduate student Brittany U’Wren received the Eleanor M. Stone Scholarship for Continuing Education after providing direct care for Eleanor Stone, a resident of Wesley Village Senior Living Community in Wilmore who passed away in January 2014.

Stone’s family was so inspired by the hard work of U’Wren, a certified nursing assistant (CNA) at Wesley Village, and her colleagues, that they started the scholarship fund in honor of their mother to assist a CNA in attaining a higher level of education.

“After shadowing over 100 hours, volunteering and working in many healthcare settings, the profession that always stood out the most to me was nursing,” said U’Wren. “The nurses were great about listening to the patient, taking into account patient preferences, such as cultures, history and religion, and tailoring the care they provided to meet the specific needs of each patient.”

The Eleanor Stone Scholarship for Continuing Education provides $1,000 per academic year to a Wesley Village Certified Nursing Assistant who will be attending a Kentucky State Board of Nursing Accredited Program. The applicant must exemplify the qualities personified by Eleanor, including a strong work ethic, self-discipline, positive attitude, respect and compassion.

“The scholarship fund was very fitting because their mom (Stone) loved to tell the story of how she had always wanted to become a doctor,” U’Wren said. “She would always inquire about everyone’s dreams, what they do, if they are in school and tell them the story. She was always thrilled to hear someone was in school to be a nurse, and would tell you to continue.”

Dr. Janie Heath, dean of the College of Nursing and Warwick Professor of Nursing, visited Wesley Village.

“Wesley Village is a tremendous facility, and I am so thankful that our students and their huge hearts represent the College of Nursing so well,” said Heath.

U’Wren is a junior currently studying pediatrics and obstetrics. She wishes to work in a general family healthcare setting after working at UK Healthcare as a nurse.
