College of Nursing Students and Faculty Present at Southern Nursing Research Society 31st Annual Conference
UK College of Nursing students and faculty recently presented at the Southern Nursing Research Society’s (SNRS) 31st annual conference, “Grounded in Research: Academic and Clinical Partnerships Transforming Health,” in Dallas, Tx., February 22-25.
The UK College of Nursing was proud to have eight undergraduate students presenting scholarly work - more than any other college and university in attendance.
Several students from the College received awards, most notably undergraduate nursing student Carson Swartz who received the Second-Place Undergraduate Student Award.
According to Associate Professor and Assistant Dean of Research Kristin Ashford, PhD, WHNP-BC, FAAN, “Swartz’s award was especially impressive because more than 90 percent of the posters were submitted by PhD students, yet Carson, an undergraduate student, placed second out of everyone.”
Not only were students successful, but College of Nursing faculty also received top honors. Assistant Professor Amanda Fallin-Bennett, PhD, RN, was selected as one of the 2016 Foundation Scholar by SNRS and the American Nurses Foundation, for her study, “Cervical Cancer Risk Reduction for Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Indiviudals: A Community Engaged Approach.”
Among the presenters were eight undergraduate students:
- Lauren Gentry, "Mothers with opioid dependence and their perception of positive nursing care during labor and delivery"
- Marissa Giuliani, "Examining the Influence of Media Exposure and Future Intent to Use Electronic Cigarettes in Women of Childbearing Age"
- Taylor Lawrence, "Relationship Between Psychosocial Factors and Their Influence on the Intention to Breastfeed During Pregnancy"
- Alyssa Lorence, "Mother's Post-Pregnancy BMI and Adipokines in Breast Milk"
- Madison Parker, "Maternal perceptions of the Zika virus in Ecuador"
- Charlotte Steward, "Physical activity and perceived barriers among pregnant women who use electronic cigarettes"
- Megan Stoeckinger, "Determining the impact of psychosocial factors among planned and unplanned pregnancies"
- Carson Swartz, "Differences in alcohol and tobacco use among women experiencing intended versus unintended pregnancies"
And four PhD students:

- Stephanie Kehler, "The Association of Maternal Stress and Immune Response with Development of a Hypertension Disorder During Pregnancy"
“The College of Nursing was wonderfully represented at the SNRS conference as seen by our record number of students and award winning researchers,” said Dr. Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing. “This year’s SNRS conference the importance of research in transforming health in Kentucky and beyond.”
SNRS was founded in 1986 after 60 nurses met in Atlanta and debated the possibility of an organization for nursing researchers in the southern region. The following year, SNRS was declared an independent organization. It is now comprised of 14 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In 1991, the boundaries were expanded to include the Caribbean, Latin America and the Bahamas.
