Nursing, UK health colleges unite to support Black Lives Matter

(LEXINGTON, Ky) -- The University of Kentucky College of Nursing united with other UK health colleges to take a stand against racial injustice and support Black Lives Matter at an event on UK's campus Friday, June 12.  

The event included several speakers representing students, faculty, and staff from the university's various health colleges.

"At the University of Kentucky, all who turn to us are deemed infinitely worthy and granted equal opportunity to learn and heal, regardless of who they are, or they are from," said UK President Eli Capilouto.

The event also included an eight-minute and forty-six second moment of silence in honor of George Floyd. 

"First and foremost, our College is unified in taking a stand against racial injustice and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement," said CON Dean Janie Heath.  "As a higher education nursing institution, our mission and responsibility are to advocate and optimize the health and wellness of all, and we offer our voice to others in amplifying and denouncing prejudiced violence.

We also recognize that words are not enough at this moment.  To that effect, we have formed a new workgroup to examine what actions we can take as College to combat racism and improve health equity."
