Assistant Professor Receives Grant from the American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant Review Committee

Office of Continuing Education Receives Grant from Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

Hazel Chappell, MSN, RN, director of Continuing Education, and her team, Drs. Lynn Roser and Marcia Stanhope recently received an R13 conference grant award from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality entitled “Reducing Antimicrobial Resistance: Shifting the Paradigm through Antibiotic Stewardship Emphasizing Evidence-Based Practices and Interprofessional Collaboration."

Associate Professor Shows Kids with Diabetes How to Be Kids

When Leslie Scott was a little girl, she watched as her mother struggled with the challenges associated with type 1 diabetes. Not just managing the disease, which involves regular blood sugar checks and insulin injections, but rather handling the stigmas and misconceptions people have about diabetes. "She wasn't allowed to participate in things because of her disease, and I saw the impact it had on her," said Scott, UK pediatric nurse practitioner and certified diabetes educator. "I didn't want that to happen to anyone anymore."

Dr. Ellen Hahn Receives Grant from Kentucky Department for Public Health

Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN, professor, and her team recently received a two-year, $310,361 funding from the Kentucky Department for Public Health for their Kentucky Center for Smoke-free Policy. The funds will be used to provide technical assistance and training to communities on smoke-free policies, including assessing community readiness, develop strategic plans, preparing fact sheets and one-pagers for the dissemination of scientific information, and assisting with local policy education campaigns related to reducing exposure on secondhand smoke. 

Professor, Assistant Professor Receive Award from National Institute on Drug Abuse

Kristin Ashford, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC, FAAN, professor, and Amanda Fallin-Bennett, PhD, RN, assistant professor, received an R34 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse  entitled “Behavioral and Enhanced Perinatal Intervention for Cessation (B-EPIC): Reducing Tobacco use among Opioid Addicted Women.”

Wilmore Clinic Now Offering Full Primary Care Services

  The Phyllis D. Corbitt Community Health Center in Wimore is now a full service primary care clinic, providing accessible health services in Jessamine County and surrounding counties. The clinic, which opened in 2015 and is named for Dr. Phyllis D. Corbitt who served the Wilmore community for more than 40 years, recently only offered limited health services such as immunizations, sports physicals and treatment of common illnesses such as upper respiratory infections and allergies.

UK Named Top School for LGBTQ* Students

  By Blair Hoover Conner The University of Kentucky recently ranked among the top 25 campuses in the nation for LGBTQ* inclusion and safety. UK received five out of five stars for overall campus climate from Campus Pride Index, a national benchmarking tool for colleges and universities which self-assesses LGBTQ*-friendly policies, programs and practices, conducted by and for LGBTQ* experts in the field of higher education. The index includes more than 235 colleges and universities.

Evelyn Parrish, PhD, APRN-BC, associate professor, director of Accreditation & Strategic Outcomes and DNP Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Track co-coordinator, met Dr. Damon A. Williams, author of the best-selling books “Strategic Diversity Leadership: Activating Change and Transformation in Higher Education” and “The Chief Diversity Officer: Strategy, Structure and Change Management” as well as the monograph “The Role of the Chief Diversity Officers in Academic Medicine" on June 11.

Gov. Matt Bevin Appoints Assistant Professor to Kentucky Board of Nursing Board of Directors & Education Committee

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin appointed Jessica Wilson, PhD, APRN, assistant professor and RN-BSN track coordinator, to a four-year term on the Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) Board of Directors as well as its Education Committee effective June 30th. 

UK CON Welcomes Nursing Student from British University in Egypt

  The University of Kentucky College of Nursing gladly welcomes Israa Desokey Mansour, a second year nursing student from the British University in Egypt. During her internship at UK, she will learn about nursing in the U.S. from educational, practice and research perspectives. This will involve interacting with nursing students, nurse practitioners and nurse scientists as well as learning about tobacco use and treatment as an important health topic in Kentucky.
