Nursing students behind installation of AED

Two undergraduate nursing students’ personal experiences with cardiac health inspired recent installation of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the third floor of the Nursing Building. UK seniors Jeffrey Key and Kaitlin Voigts submitted a proposal for the AED as a result of experiencing incidents of cardiac arrest. Key was in sixth grade when he found his neighbor suffering a heart attack near a high school. Thanks to the high school’s AED and fast interventions, his neighbor survived.

Three clinical groups from NUR 401 Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and their instructors attended the Suicide Prevention Conference: Raising Awareness & Sharing Our Stories Featuring Carol Graham on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The University of Kentucky Office of Work-Life presented the one-day conference at the William T. Young Library. The event featured a talk by Kentucky native, Carol Graham, who shared her own personal story of loss.

The UK College of Nursing, now serving more students than ever before, has set a record for the retention rate of the last year’s freshmen class – 80.8 percent of them returned to continue their work towards becoming the next generation of nurse leaders. Dr. Janie Heath, dean of the College of Nursing, attributes this success to the hardworking staff and faculty members within the college. “I am so proud of and grateful for every person who works daily to create such a positive learning environment that clearly inspires personal growth,” said Dr. Heath.

Dr. Nora Warshawsky, assistant professor in the College of Nursing, and Ph.D student Arica Brandford's study about Kentucky’s RN workforce was published in September’s Journal of Nursing Administration. Warshawsky’s and Brandford’s “Achieving 80% BSN by 2020: Lessons Learned from Kentucky’s Registered Nurses” aims to understand the educational status and plans of Kentucky’s workforce in advancing nursing educational levels.
