Dr. Jenna Hatcher Receives Grant to Promote Colorectal Screening in Rural Appalachia

12/12/2014 – Jennifer Hatcher, PhD, RN, associate professor, received a two-year $359,528 award from the National Cancer Institute for her project, “Promoting Colorectal Cancer Screening (CRC) in Rural Emergency Departments.” 

Grant Will Help Veterans With Military Medical Training Transition Into Civilian Nursing Careers

12/4/2014 – Dr. Fran Hardin-Fanning, associate professor at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, recently received a $627,000 Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant to advance a project to prepare veterans for the civilian nursing workforce by establishing the Med/Vet to BSN option at the UK College of Nursing.

​Dr. Ellen Hahn Named Associate Director for UK Center for Health Services Research

11/17/2014  – Dr. Ellen Hahn is one of three UK faculty members who have been selected as associate directors to help lead the UK Center for Health Services Research (CHSR), said Dr. Mark V. Williams, director of the center. The Center will focus on creating, testing and scaling next-generation solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of health care delivery and the overall health of people within Kentucky and beyond.

The stigma of mental illness is beginning to be overcome, and research is beginning to outline the severity of the connection between mental and physical health. There is a movement toward recovery-focused care in which the whole person is treated and not merely the symptoms. Nursing is key to this holistic, team-centered approach to patient care.

A Conversation With the New Dean

10/30/2014 – Last March, after a long, nationwide search, the University of Kentucky announced the good news—the College of Nursing had found its new dean. Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, is a national nursing leader with nearly 40 years’ experience in nursing and a background marked by nationally recognized achievements in nursing education, tobacco control and health care outreach.

Carolyn Williams Inducted Into UK College of Public Health Hall of Fame

10/28/2014 – The UK College of Public Health inducted two new members into its Hall of Fame during the 11th Annual Hall of Fame celebration in October 2014. The Hall of Fame was established in 2004 as a means of formally recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the health and welfare of the citizens of the Commonwealth, the nation, or the world. The 2014 inductees into the Hall of Fame are Dr. Samuel Matheny and Dr. Carolyn Williams, who have both demonstrated such achievement and commitment.

Meet the New Dean - Dr. Janie Heath

9/3/2014  – With a 38-year-long career in critical care nursing, nursing administration, advanced practice and academia, Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, has joined the College of Nursing as its fifth dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.

Founding Dean of UK College of Nursing Passes Away

8/6/2014  – We are sorry to announce that Dr. Marcia Dake, founding dean of the UK College of Nursing, has passed away. Dr. Dake served in the Army Nurse Corps during WWII and used her GI Bill to complete her master’s and doctoral degrees. She was one of the first ten doctorally prepared nurses in the country and in 1958, at age 35, was the youngest dean to serve at a college of nursing in the U.S.
