APNA Kentucky Chapter Receives Innovation Award

The award was received on behalf of the chapter by the immediate past chapter president, Dr. Sooksai Kaewbua (2017 DNP alumna) and the chapter secretary Sarret Seng (2019 BSN graduate).

UK Celebrates 10 Years of Being a Tobacco-Free Campus

Ten years ago, University of Kentucky administrators, students, faculty and staff made the decision to become a tobacco-free campus, prohibiting all tobacco products including e-cigarettes, indoors and out, on all UK property. Since then, the university has become a healthier place to live, work and learn.

RICH Heart Group Receives Record Number of Awards from American Heart Association

  The College of Nursing Research and Interventions for Cardiovascular Health (RICH) program received a record number of awards and abstract acceptances from the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Nov. 16-18. In fact, of the 75 accepted abstracts for the Cardiovascular Stroke Nursing Council, 13 abstracts (17.3% of the total abstracts) were accepted and presented by the RICH Heart team.

Kentucky Nurse Leaders Advocate on Capitol Hill

  Kentucky deans and directors visited Capitol Hill to meet with legislators to advocate for funding that will advance the nursing workforce and nursing science efforts.

Kentucky Recognized for Strong Smoke-free Workplace Laws

  FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 27, 2019)  The American Nonsmokers’ Rights Foundation (ANRF) has ranked Kentucky third in this year’s ‘smoke-free indoor air challenge.’ Kentucky enacted the third most local smoke-free laws in 2018, behind Texas and Mississippi. The awards were presented at the National Conference on Tobacco or Health in Minneapolis. Winners were determined based on policy surveillance data compiled from the U.S. Tobacco Control Laws Database.

Student, Alum Advocate for Diversifying the Nursing Workforce in Washington, D.C.

Corinna Hughes, DNP student and representative for local chapter of the National Black Nurses Association, joined Delanor Manson, BSN alum and executive director for the Kentucky Nurses Association and KNA Foundation, at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Minority Health (OMH) and the Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action for a Fall 2019 Diversifying the Nursing Workforce: Mentoring for Student Retention and NCLEX Success at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) Workshop.

In the Spotlight: Brittany Fiero

  Brittany Fiero is a catalyst for good. Her education and career have been devoted to helping people get to where they want to go—whether it’s building their job skills, using activities to promote their well-being, or as in her current position, recruiting nursing students to the University of Kentucky. “I really enjoy helping people reach their goals, whether it’s a job or education,” says Fiero, who worked at a non-profit, teaching career skills, and in health care as a recreational therapist before joining the College of Nursing in June 2018.

UK's First Agriculture Nurse Sets the Stage for Kentucky's Farmers

  Mark Cornelison Photography In Lincoln County, the hottest ticket in town isn't a big concert or hit musical. It's Jack Blair and his wife Thelma, two local farmers, performing on stage at the Lincoln County Extension Office in Stanford, Ky. In the show, Thelma, concerned with Jack's hearing, asks him if he remembered to wear ear plugs before working with his loud farm machinery. Jack's response: "WHAT?" The audience, comprising farmers from the surrounding community, roars with laughter.
