Alumni Spotlight: Corinna Hughes
Dr. Corrina Hughes, DNP, FNP-C, is a two-time UK College of Nursing graduate. She completed the Traditional BSN Program in 2015 and the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program in 2020.
We chatted with Dr. Hughes to learn more about her nursing career and experiences in our program. Here’s what we learned:
What is your current position? What do you like most about your role?
Currently, I am a Urology Nurse Practitioner at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. After completing my DNP at UK, I decided to embark on a 12-month Urology APP Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, where I continued my professional journey. One of the aspects I appreciate most about my role is its diverse nature. From engaging in procedural tasks to providing in-clinic services, I am constantly challenged and fulfilled by the variety of responsibilities and experiences it offers.
What advice do you have for current nursing students?
I encourage nursing students to step outside their comfort zones and explore the various opportunities that their university provides. Embrace research, mentorship, shadowing experiences, global health programs, and networking opportunities. Pushing boundaries and trying new experiences can truly enrich your educational and personal journey.
What advice do you have for new nurses and/or graduates?
First and foremost, it's essential to acknowledge that you can't know everything, and that's perfectly okay. Embrace the fact that learning is a continuous process! However, trust your instincts and speak up when you have doubts or concerns. Even if you don't have all the answers, trusting your intuition can take you a long way in providing quality care.
Do you have any favorite memories from your time at UK?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent eight years at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, and there are countless memories to cherish. One aspect that stands out is the strong bonds and friendships I formed throughout the program, both as a student and as a nurse. It's heartwarming to look back and see how my friends and colleagues have pursued their passions in the nursing field. I often reminisce about the early days when we were just starting to grasp the concept of nursing through our introductory courses.
What’s one or two fun facts about yourself?
In the past, I had the amazing opportunity to serve as a sexual health educator at the University of Kentucky. Perhaps you may have even seen me back in the day during one of the med surg educational demonstrations! It was a rewarding experience to promote awareness and provide valuable information in such a crucial area of healthcare.
