College of Nursing Associate Professor Mollie Aleshire, DNP, APRN-BC, was inducted as a Fellow of the National Academies of Practice (NAP) on April 14th in Atlanta, Georgia.

NAP, a non-profit organization founded in 1981 to advise governmental bodies on our health care system, is dedicated to affordable, accessible, coordinated quality healthcare for all.

"We congratulate Dr. Aleshire on this outstanding achievement," says Janie Heath, PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, FAANP, FNAP, dean and Warkwick Professor of Nursing. "We are pleased to have another faculty member join the ranks as a Fellow of a prestigious nursing academy."

Dr. Aleshire received her BSN from Berea College in 1999, an MSN from the University of Kentucky in 2003, a post-graduate certificate from Spalding University in 200, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Kentucky in 2010.

In addition to serving as an associate professor at the College, Dr. Aleshire is a certified primary care family and pediatric nurse practitioner. Her nursing practice spans more than 18 years with experience in both critical care and ambulatory care settings, and she currently provides care to patients across the lifespan in a rural community health center. Additionally, Dr. Aleshire serves as a clinical preceptor for advanced practice nursing students.

Dr. Aleshire’s primary scholarship interest is promoting health and health care access for vulnerable populations, with a particular focus on health care disparities for LGBTQ* populations. Current and historic extramural research with Dr. Aleshire as an investigator has explored 1) health care providers’ (HCPs) comfort with providing care to LGBT patients; 2) how HCPs’ tailor care for LGBT and HIV patients, 3) the efficacy of a social media intervention to reduce colorectal risk factors in rural Appalachians; and 4) a community-engaged approach to reduce cervical cancer risk factors for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals. Dr. Aleshire has authored numerous publications and presentations.

Dr. Aleshire is a member of several professional organizations, serves as a manuscript reviewer for several journals and actively participates in international, professional, university, college, and community service efforts.
