Tilda Shalof, author of A Nurse’s Story, spoke to pre-nursing students about her work as a an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse and what it is really like to work behind the closed hospital curtains.

Shalof discussed the drama, the sardonic humor, the grinding workload, the cheerful camaraderie, the big issues and the small, during her talk at Memorial Hall on September 29, 2015.

“I’m often asked, ‘Isn’t nursing depressing?’” said Shalof. “I have experienced real depression in my life, but not because of my profession. Nursing is the opposite of despair; it offers the opportunity to do something about suffering. But you have to be strong to be a nurse.”

Shalof was invited to speak as part of an introductory course for pre-nursing students to help them understand the full spectrum of the nursing profession.

“Tilda’s work is important not only as an inspiration and guide for prospective nurses, but also to help educate our media on the leading role nurses play in our country’s changing health care systems.” said Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.
