Dr. Nikki Garritano Named Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE)
Nikki Garritano, DNP, APRN-BC, associate professor, was recently selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE). Dr. Garritano joins a highly selective group of education professionals from around the world who possess an identified expertise in educational technology leadership.
ADEs are trusted advisors on the realities of integrating technology into learning environments; passionate advocates for the potential technologies to engage and empower students; authentic authors who share best practices for the advancement of teaching and learning; and global ambassadors who empower each other to expand the walls of the classroom to provide global experiences.
Dr. Garritano maintains clinical practice as a pediatric nurse practitioner with Dayton Children's Hospital in Ohio in the retail clinic care setting. She received her nurse practitioner training at Vanderbilt University and pursued doctoral studies focusing on the strategic placement of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) on college campuses at the University of Cincinnati.
Dr. Garritano is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), the Ohio League for Nursing (OLN), the American Nurses Association (ANA), the Kentucky Nurses Association (KNA), and the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP). She currently serves as President for Ohio NAPNAP, is a member of NAPNAP’s National Health Policy Committee, and serves on the Board of Directors for the NAPNAP Foundation. Dr. Garritano served as a pediatric content expert on an $850,000 grant through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) focusing on the development of online simulated case studies to aid in the education of nurse practitioner students. She has also received funding to develop an alternative clinical experience for her students to address the shortage of clinical preceptors. Dr. Garritano was inducted into the 2019 Apple Distinguished Educator Class related to her work integrating technology into doctoral level nursing education. She is also passionate about health policy and in 2014 she was recognized as a Faculty Policy Fellow by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and in 2016 as a NAPNAP Advocacy Scholar. Dr. Garritano’s professional interests include the integration of technology and education, health policy, nursing leadership and mentorship, and mindfulness-based stress reduction for self care. In these capacities, she also serves as a nurse coach and consultant.
