Katie Voigts, BSN, RN, PhD student at the UK College of Nursing, was recently named a 2018 Disparities Researchers Equalizing Access for Minorities (DREAM) Scholar, supported by the College of Nursing, Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET).

The program will launch September 2018 and will support the training of exceptional underrepresented minority pre-docs, postdocs and assistant professors who are committed to health equity research. Voigts is one of five scholars and five associates to be selected from the competitive application process.

The Dream Scholars Program will provide access to solid foundation in career development and core human subject's research, with an emphasis on health equity research methods (e.g. Community based participatory research, Dissemination and Implementation). The duration of the program is 2 years.

Dream Scholars and Associates will be required to participate in twice monthly 1.5 hour meetings that will be comprised of research and career development seminars and opportunities to present chalk talks and works in progress. Scholars will be expected to produce scholarly products, such as abstracts, manuscripts and grant submissions. Scholars and Associates will attend an annual 2-day writing retreat.

Katie Voigts, BSN, RN graduated from the University of Kentucky College of Nursing with her BSN in 2015. She is currently a third year PhD student at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing and works as the Program Coordinator for Corazón de la Familia. Her research interests include the experience of racial discrimination and its effect on health outcomes, as well as examining the influence of genes on this relationship in minority populations.
