As a clinical nurse specialist in mental health nursing, a funded researcher, and author, Vicki Hines-Martin has demonstrated her ability to enhance nursing education. She is currently the Director of the Office of Health Disparities and Community Engagement in the School of Nursing, and the Associate Vice President in the Office of Community Engagement at the University of Louisville. As Associate Vice President, she commissions the allocation of and oversight for six-figure grants that are focused on improving aspects of education and quality at the University of Louisville.

Since graduating from the University of Cincinnati with an MSN and a PhD from the University of Kentucky, Vicki Hines-Martin has professionally and personally impacted the community on both a local and national level. She served as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in Washington D.C. for her work with underserved communities and for her commitment to African American Nurses’ education and diversity in nursing. Academically, Hines-Martin is a nursing professor at the University of Louisville and mentors doctoral students who have successfully focused their research in the areas of health disparities and underserved populations.

Hines-Martin has received numerous awards for her community work and currently serves on a board of a local community organization, Neighborhood House, which provides services in a low-income community. Her focus on community is a core aspect of both of her university roles, and students who seek her out as a mentor do so because of her work in this area. Her most current work on the AAN mental health expert panel focused on vulnerable and underserved community based populations. The AAN work has resulted in a position paper that was recently forwarded to the White House at the request of Vice President Biden. It will be used in new policy development. This position statement will also be published in the journal, Nursing Outlook, in the near future.
