UK students join KNA to advocate for nurses, patients in Frankfort

FRANKFORT, Ky. (Feb. 4, 2020) -- University of Kentucky College of Nursing students and faculty joined the Kentucky Nurses Association for 2020 Kentucky Nurses Day at the Capitol.  

Nurses Day at the Capitol marked a true day of advocacy, where KNA members, nurses and others met with legislators from across the Commonwealth to share their concerns and ideas about issues that impact nurses, their families, colleagues and patients.  

“Being at the legislature taught our students how to tangibly access and engage in advocacy," said Dr. Camille Burnett, an associate professor at UK College of Nursing.  "Having that experience is so important for our students and faculty because health is not only a fundamental human right but is political and therefore all nurses must be prepared to be leaders for change within and across the system.”

“The KNA Advocacy Day is a wonderful opportunity to involve students in health policy," said Dr. Julie Marfell, an associate professor at UK CON. "Meeting with state legislators makes this a real world experience for the students.  Our students did well conveying the current nursing priorities to their legislators."
