2020 kicks off with Blessing of the Hands Ceremony for new students

On Jan. 14, the incoming class of undergraduate students at UK Nursing participated in the Blessing of the Hands Ceremony --an event that symbolizes what it means to become a nurse and touch the lives of countless patients. Students gathered in a large circle and lit pin lights one-by-one to represent the light Florence Nightingale (the founder or modern nursing) was known for carrying as she cared for the sick and wounded.   

Dr. Lee Anne Walmsley awarded $28,500 for "in the barn" student mental health program

UK College of Nursing professor Lee Anne Walmsley PhD, MSN, RN, and her colleagues were recently awarded a $28,500 grant from Women & Philanthropy for the hCATS (health Colleges Advancing Team Skills) to the BARN (Bringing Awareness Right Now) for Student Mental Health & Wellness program. 

Nursing Leadership Lecture Series to feature Marsha Hughes-Rease Jan. 23

  LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 6, 2019) -- Please join the University of Kentucky College of Nursing for its upcoming Nursing Leadership Lecture Series featuring Marsh Hughes-Rease, CEO of Quo Vadis Coaching and Consulting LLC.  This special lecture event will take place Thursday, Jan. 23, at noon, at the UK Hospital Pavilion's Karpf Auditorium (Pavilion A Auditorium), and is free and open to the public.

UK CON Fulbright Scholar Researches Anemia in Peruvian Children

  Ana Maria Linares, associate professor in UK’s College of Nursing, traveled to Peru this past March 2019 to research the cause of iron-deficiency anemia in Peruvian children at the National University of San Luis Gonzaga. Linares’ four-month trip was sponsored by the Fulbright Scholar Program, which offers over 800 teaching, research or combination teaching/research awards in over 125 countries.

Dr. Jean Edward is helping Kentuckians better understand health insurance

  LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2020) – When Jean Edward, Ph.D, assistant professor in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, first started her research into disparities in health care access in the Hispanic and Latino population in Louisville, she was looking into not only how people accessed health care, but why some people had access while others didn’t. She found a number of contributing factors, but one stood out above the rest – how can people access health care if they don’t understand health insurance?

CON graduate Roger Dittert finds dream career through tragedy

  LEXINGTON, Ky. (Dec. 20, 2019) — Graduate from college, find a job, become a husband, a grieving father, and then a college student again is not the average path one takes in their post-grad life. UK grad Roger Dittert says there’s no direct path to finding your passion. In 2015, Roger and his wife Rebecca were a typical young couple. They’d been married for about two years and were pregnant with their first son. The Ditterts were planning for the change a child would bring to their lives, but there was no way to plan for the turn their lives took.

Class of December 2019 honored at Pinning Ceremony

  The University of Kentucky College of Nursing celebrated its Class of December 2019 at a special Pinning Ceremony on Friday, Dec. 20.  The event, held at the Singletary Center for the Arts, is a time-honored tradition where each nursing graduate accepts a College of Nursing boomerang pin from someone special in their life.  The pin symbolizes that the graduate has earned the privilege to practice nursing and makes a promise to the public to always offer safe, quality care.

APNA Kentucky Chapter Receives Innovation Award

The award was received on behalf of the chapter by the immediate past chapter president, Dr. Sooksai Kaewbua (2017 DNP alumna) and the chapter secretary Sarret Seng (2019 BSN graduate).

UK Celebrates 10 Years of Being a Tobacco-Free Campus

Ten years ago, University of Kentucky administrators, students, faculty and staff made the decision to become a tobacco-free campus, prohibiting all tobacco products including e-cigarettes, indoors and out, on all UK property. Since then, the university has become a healthier place to live, work and learn.
