How to make breastfeeding easier for women working outside the home The following appeared in the Lexington Herald-Leader on Feb. 28. The health advantages of exclusive breastfeeding have been documented and reported for mothers and children. According to a 2014 report from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nationally 79 percent of infants have been breastfed and 49 percent were breastfeeding at 6 months.

College of Nursing senior Drew Walls will dance his way through his last semester as family relations chair for DanceBlue, a year-long, student-run fundraiser culminating in a 24-hour dance marathon, which has raised more than $8 million for the DanceBlue Kentucky Children’s Hospital Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Clinic since 2006.

By Sally Evans On October 16, 2013, College of Nursing DNP student Nicki Sullivan lost her 12-year-old son, Chase Whatley, to suicide. Wanting to honor Chase’s life, Sullivan, 39, received her BSN in August of 2014 and entered the DNP program that fall. “I thought this was the best way to do something productive,” Sullivan said. “I needed to figure out a way to channel the wealth of knowledge and resources I had into something I could use to help people.”

Out of nearly 6,000 health care organizations in the United States, less than 7 percent have achieved Magnet designation.

Whether it be halftime at a University of Kentucky basketball game or a day off from class, undergraduate nursing senior and UK cheerleader Emily Sawyer studies every second she gets. Sawyer, from Lexington, always dreamed of attending UK and was inspired to apply for nursing school following her mother and grandmother who were also nurses. Sawyer’s mother, who worked in obstetrics (OB) at UK, struggled with addiction and recently finished rehab.
