Dr. Ty Borders receives UI College of Public Health 2020 Outstanding Alumni Award

Dr. Ty Borders, University of Kentucky College of Nursing professor and director of the Rural and Underserved Health Research Center, was recently named by the University of Iowa College of Public Health as one of their 2020 Outstanding Alumni.   Dr. Borders received a Master of Arts degree in hospital and health administration in 1995, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in hospital and health administration in 1999, and a Master of Science degree in epidemiology in 2001, all from the University of Iowa College of Public Health.

Lynn Kelso receives UKHC-UKCON Academic-Clinical Engagement Award

  As part of UK HealthCare's annual nursing awards, the University of Kentucky College of Nursing's Lynn Kelso, MSN, APRN, FCCM, FAANP, was awarded the 2020 UKHC-UKCON Academic-Clinical Engagement Award.  The award is given each year to a nurse who demonstrates the impact of providing services that promote the UK HealthCare and UK College of Nursing mission of an authentic and integrated academic-clinical partnership.

Three CON faculty members to be inducted as Fellows of the American Academy of Nursing

The American Academy of Nursing has selected three University of Kentucky College of Nursing faculty members, Dr. Camille Burnett, Dr. Lovoria Williams, and Dr. Sharon Lock, to be inducted into its 2020 class of Academy Fellows.    The inductees will be recognized for their significant contributions to health and health care at the Academy’s annual Transforming Health, Driving Policy Conference, taking place virtually October 29-31, 2020.

UK Nursing leaders appointed to Mayor's Commission for Racial Justice & Equality

  University of Kentucky Nursing leaders Kacy Allen Bryant, Dr. Lovoria Williams, and Dr. Tukea Talbert have been appointed to serve on Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton's Commission for Racial Justice & Equality.  They join a team of 70 community leaders who are charged with seeking solutions that dismantle systemic racism in Fayette County.  

Jake Higgins appointed to Kentucky Board of Nursing

(LEXINGTON, Ky.) UK College of Nursing professor Jake Higgins PhD, RN, CCRN-K, has been appointed to the Kentucky Board of Nursing by Governor Andy Beshear effective July 1, 2020.  "Congratulations Jake! We are thrilled to see Jake apply his scholarly nursing practice expertise to help drive effective decision making for evidence based practice, regulation, and policy for nursing licensure," said CON Dean Janie Heath.  

Dr. Sheila Melander featured on Nurse Practioner Journal Podcast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 15, 2020) -- Dr. Sheila Melander, Associate Dean of MSN & DNP Faculty Affairs & Practice, was the featured guest on last week's Nurse Practioner Journal podcast.  She discussed now COVID-19 emergency state orders have helped APRNs practice at a higher level of their scope of practice.  She was also joined by UK HealthCare's Lacey Buchler, who talked about how UKHC prepared their APRNs for utilization during the pandemic and how the emergency orders have assisted in the process. 

Dr. Jessica Wilson elected president of Kentucky Board of Nursing

University of Kentucky College of Nursing professor Jessica Wilson PhD, APRN-BC, was recently elected president of the Kentucky Board of Nursing effective July 1, 2020.  Dr. Wilson was appointed by Governor Matt Bevin in 2018 to a four-year term on the KBN Board of Directors with specific responsibilities providing board support for the Education Committee.

Dr. Ashford selected as UK University Research Professor Awardee for 2020-21

Kristin Ashford PhD, APRN-BC, FAAN, has been selected as one of the University Research Professorship Awardees for 2020-21.  The UK Board of Trustees will recognize her in June for her significant research contributions to advance maternal and child health outcomes with model programs such as the Perinatal Assistance and Treatment Home (PATHways) and Beyond Birth that have served hundreds of perinatal women throughout the commonwealth with substance use disorders (SUDs).

Dr. Deborah Reed receives prestigious Sarah Bennett Holmes Award

  The College of Nursing's Dr. Deborah Reed was recently awarded the prestigious Sarah Bennet Holmes Award by the University of Kentucky Women's Forum for her contributions to issues that affect women at UK and across the Commonwealth.  Each year, the award is presented to two female UK employees-- one faculty member and one staff member-- to recognize efforts that would otherwise go unnoticed through typical channels.   

Dr. Jean Edward is helping Kentuckians better understand health insurance

  LEXINGTON, Ky. (Jan. 7, 2020) – When Jean Edward, Ph.D, assistant professor in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, first started her research into disparities in health care access in the Hispanic and Latino population in Louisville, she was looking into not only how people accessed health care, but why some people had access while others didn’t. She found a number of contributing factors, but one stood out above the rest – how can people access health care if they don’t understand health insurance?
