Congratulations to College of Nursing senior Jordan Brown and Class of 2024 alum Omar Brown on receiving 2024 Lyman T. Johnson awards! Jordan received the Torch Bearer award and Omar received the Torch of Excellence award. They were honored and presented the awards - along with 33 other award winners from colleges across the University of Kentucky - at a ceremony during the 2024 Homecoming Week.

Jordan Brown is a senior nursing student from Cincinnati, Ohio. During her time at the UK College of Nursing, Jordan has made significant contributions as the Nursing Representative for Hues in Medicine, served as a student ambassador for the College of Nursing and actively participated in the College of Nursing Diversity Students in Nursing.

Beyond campus, she has demonstrated her commitment to community service through volunteer work with the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Lexington Humane Society. Additionally, she has gained valuable hands-on experience as a nurse extern at CHI Saint Joseph Hospital. Upon graduation, she wants to pursue a career as an RN at Kentucky Children’s Hospital, where she hopes to continue positively impacting young patients’ lives.

Omar Brown, a May 2024 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree originally from Dayton, Ohio, has made significant strides in public health and nursing. The College of Nursing Alumni Association recognized his exceptional contributions by awarding him the May 2024 Nightingale Award. During his time as a student, he distinguished himself through his participation on the college's Equity, Outreach and Social Justice Council, where he served as a student representative. His dedication to addressing health disparities and promoting equitable healthcare access has been a hallmark of his academic journey.

His scholarly achievements include his work on the project "Nutritional Aid and Resource Mapping: Using GIS to Assess and Catalog Charitable Food Programs in Lexington, Kentucky" which demonstrated his innovative approach to combining nursing knowledge with technology to address community health needs. His professional experience includes roles at Eastern State Hospital and the Lexington-Fayette Health Department.
