Op-ed: Suicide is a silent epidemic in Kentucky that's taking our children

The following op-ed appeared in the Courier Journal on March 21, 2019. Although Kentucky is known for lives lost from accidental drug overdoses, a silent epidemic is also taking too many of our children — suicide.

Nursing Faculty Meet with Nation's Drug Czar

  Kristin Ashford, PhD, APRN, WHNP-BC, FAAN, professor and associate dean of Undergraduate Faculty and Interprofessional Education Affairs, and Amanda Fallin-Bennett, PhD, RN, assistant professor, met with Jim Carroll, the national director of the Office of Drug Control Policy on Tuesday, March 19. Currently, Dr. Ashford serves as founder of Beyond Birth, and Dr. Fallin-Bennett serves as the Director of Voices of Hope. The group also met with Governor Matt Bevin, Congressman Andy Barr and Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton. 

Nursing Students Return to Ecuador Clinic to Serve Community, Get Hands-on Experience

  Seven undergraduate nursing students recently traveled to Santo Domingo, Ecuador, through Shoulder to Shoulder Global to serve the community and gain hands-on experience in a clinical setting. Over the years, over a thousand UK students, faculty, staff and community partners participants traveled to Ecuador to provide services such as basic medical and dental care, health education, school health screenings, women’s health, home visits and community-based learning.

Drs. Judi Daniels, Darlene Welsh Inducted as Fellows into National Academies of Practice

Judi Daniels, PhD, APRN, FNP, PNP, FNAP, assistant professor, and Darlene Welsh, PhD, MSN, RN, FNAP, associate professor and assistant dean of BSN Program Studies, were recently inducted as a Fellows of the National Academies of Practice at the 2019 Annual Meeting and Forum in Pentagon City, Virginia, March 9.

Dr. Lovoria Williams Joins Eastern State Hospital Team

Lovoria Williams, PhD, APRN-BC, FAANP, associate professor, was fully credentialed at the UK HealthCare Medical Staff Operations Subcommittee meeting for her Department of Psychiatry appointment for faculty practice at Eastern State Hospital. Eastern State Hospital provides recovery-focused, individualized inpatient acute care mental health services in a modern, comfortable setting.

Nursing Student Ends up in Foreigner Video Through Shriners Hospital

  The University of Kentucky College of Nursing participated in the 33rd annual conference hosted by the Southern Nursing Research Society in Orlando, Florida, February 27-March 1.  This year's conference theme was "Imagining the Future Through Nursing Research and Innovations."
