Nursing Student Releases Book About Women War Leaders

Emily Jordan, a junior honors student at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, and her father, Jonathan W. Jordan, celebrate the forgotten heroes of the past in a new book about woman war leaders. Their new book, The War Queens, tells the story of the wartime tactics of some of the most powerful female leaders in history. The father-daughter duo reveal in their new book the extraordinary power and potential of women who walked through war’s kiln and emerged from the other side.

CON hosts Virtual Pinning, DNP & PhD Recognition Ceremony

The UK College of Nursing hosted its first-ever Virtual Pinning Ceremony and DNP & PhD Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 8.  "While we weren't able to celebrate our graduates in-person, the virtual events honored our students' outstanding accomplishments in both meaningful and memorable ways," said Janie Heath, Dean of the College of Nursing. "We send a big thank you out to everyone who participated and helped us orchestrate the ceremonies.   It was definitely a day for this history books!" 

Dr. Sheila Melander featured on Nurse Practioner Journal Podcast

LEXINGTON, Ky. (May 15, 2020) -- Dr. Sheila Melander, Associate Dean of MSN & DNP Faculty Affairs & Practice, was the featured guest on last week's Nurse Practioner Journal podcast.  She discussed now COVID-19 emergency state orders have helped APRNs practice at a higher level of their scope of practice.  She was also joined by UK HealthCare's Lacey Buchler, who talked about how UKHC prepared their APRNs for utilization during the pandemic and how the emergency orders have assisted in the process. 

What to Know About Tobacco Use and COVID-19

An early report from cases in China indicated people sickened with the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) infection had worse outcomes if they smoked. While this one study noted an association, it will take more research to determine the extent of the risk smoking and vaping have on COVID-19 illness. While we don’t know for sure, there is certainly cause for concern based on what we do know about how smoking and vaping make users more susceptible to respiratory infections and illness.
