Homecoming 2018: Celebrating our Golden Wildcats!

The College of Nursing celebrated the 50th anniversary of the class of 1968  - our Golden Wildcats - and the classes of 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008 at the Signature Club on Friday, Oct. 19. Students and faculty gathered for lunch and heard from Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing, to honor the legacy and tradition of nursing excellence left by the Golden Wildcats.

UK Lyman T. Johnson Constituency Group Awards Nursing Students Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer Awards

The University of Kentucky Lyman T. Johnson Constituency Group awarded College of Nursing MSN graduate Alalia Mack and undergraduate student Nana Ntodi the Torch of Excellence and Torch Bearer Awards Fri., Oct. 19 during the 26th Annual Homecoming Awards Celebration. The reception commemorated the 67th year of an African American presence on UK’s campus.

Nursing Research Papers Day 2018

  UK HealthCare and the UK College of Nursing showcased the work of nurses and students at the 28th annual Nursing Research Papers Day at Hyatt Regency Lexington on Friday, October 12.  This year, Christopher Lee, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN, FHFSA, associate dean of Research and professor at Boston College's Connell School of Nursing, presented "Bio-Behavioral Research in Heart Failure" as the keynote. hCATS Program Visits Letcher County

  The University of Kentucky hCATS (Health Advancing Team Kills) Team of dental and nursing students provided oral health and educational services to 130 elementary school aged children with faculty and staff from the Center for Interprofessional Health Education.

Teaching Spotlight: Tammy Courtney & Carole Haurylko

  “Being so hands-on in the classroom has taken our student-teacher relationship to the next level. Everyone truly enjoys each other’s company, and the friendly environment stimulates exceptional growth in our students,” says Tammy Courtney, MSN, RN, CNE. Courtney and Carole Haurylko, BSN, RN, are two of three faculty members who teach the lab portion of NUR 201: Assessment and Health Promotion Across the Lifespan. Tricia Rogers (not pictured), MS, RN, rounds out the trio, who work hard on a daily basis to ensure the success of their students.

Holly Dye Receives Over $1 Million to Expand Medication-Assisted Treatment to Postpartum and Early-Parenting Women

Holly Dye, MRC, director and transformation manager for Beyond Birth, recently received a Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) grant entitled “EMATTA: Expanding MAT Access through a Team Treatment Approach.” Opioid-use and addiction continues to be a national crisis; Kentucky and Appalachia in particular have been deeply affected by epidemic.

UK Nursing Student Promotes Ghanaian Culture and Student Mentorship at Ms. Ghana USA Competition

  Photo by Mark Cornelison When College of Nursing student Nana Ntodi was looking for a platform and resources to launch a student mentorship platform in her native Ghana, she found the perfect opportunity in the Ms. Ghana USA pageant competition.  "This was my first pageant - I wanted to do it because it would provide me with the appropriate resources to implement my project, and it combined my Ghanainan and American cultures."

Faculty Spotlight: Kacy Allen-Bryant

  By Tassy Taylor At only 2 years old, Kacy Allen-Bryant, MSN, MPH, RN, lecturer, lovingly tended to her grandmother’s ankle injury. As a teen, she helped her grandmother care for newborns recently discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). As a student, Kacy Allen-Bryant always excelled in science and math, and she eagerly participated in extracurricular activities that exposed her to STEM professions. She always knew nursing was in her DNA, and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) was calling her name.

Katie Voigts Named DREAM Scholar

Katie Voigts, BSN, RN, PhD student at the UK College of Nursing, was recently named a 2018 Disparities Researchers Equalizing Access for Minorities (DREAM) Scholar, supported by the College of Nursing, Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Center for Health Equity Transformation (CHET).
