UK College of Nursing Student, Breast Cancer Survivor Calls Movement Her Medicine

By Elizabeth Adams Striding across the finish line in pink knee-high socks imprinted with the phrase “tough ta-tas,” Brandy Smith completed her first 5K as a breast cancer survivor on Oct. 23. She wore a victory sash and clasped a pink carnation as she and husband Jason waited for friends at the ballpark. The race was a moment of exhalation for the University of Kentucky student who refused to let her illness hinder her progress toward becoming a nurse.

College of Nursing Student Bikes 1,000 Miles with Family, Raises $17,115 for Children in Syria

When College of Nursing junior Maya Husayni’s father asked if she wanted to bike 1,000 miles to raise money for the children of Syria, she didn’t hesitate to say yes. The Husaynis set up a donation page for friends and family to donate to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a UN program headquartered in New York City that provides humanitarian and developmental assistance to children and mothers in developing countries. It aids children of Syria by providing access to drinking water, vaccinations, education, psychological support and winter supplies.

UK HealthCare and the UK College of Nursing showcased the work of nurses and students at the 26th annual Nursing Research Papers Day at the Griffin Gate Marriott Resort and Spa on Nov. 11, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. This year, nationally known nurse scientist Cheryl Tatano Beck, DNSC, CNM, FAAN, served as the keynote speaker and presented “Post Traumatic Growth in Clinicians: Positive Aspects of Clinicians Who Experience Secondary Traumatic Stress.” Download the agenda here.

The College of Nursing celebrated the 50th anniversary of the class of 1966 - our Golden Wildcats - and the classes of 1976, 1986, 1996 and 2006 at the Signature Club on Friday, Oct. 7. Students and faculty gathered for lunch and heard from Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing, Col. Marla De Jong, PhD alum, to honor the legacy and tradition of nursing excellence left by the Golden Wildcats. Below is the Dean's address:
