New Study Examines Use of Multiple Tobacco Products in College Students

A new study co-authored by College of Nursing Professor Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN,  found that roughly 15 percent of college students who had ever used tobacco currently use more than one tobacco product. Polytobacco use (using more than one tobacco product) drives nicotine addiction and can prolong the use of tobacco products, leading to acute and chronic negative health risks such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and more.

DNP Student Selected as American Psychiatric Nurses Association Board of Directors Student Scholar

DNP student Sooksai Kaewbua, BSN, is one of 15 graduate nursing students in the nation to be selected as an American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) Board of Directors Student Scholar for 2016. She will present her abstract titled “Healthy Heart, Healthy Brain: An Innovative Game to Improve Mental Health by Preventing Cardiovascular Disease” at the APNA 30th Annual Conference in October in Hartford, Ct. in addition to receiving a complimentary membership in the organization for one year.

Assistant Professor Named Kentucky Nurse Practitioner Advocate of the Year

College of Nursing Assistant Professor Kathy Wheeler, PhD, APRN, NP-C, FNAP, FAANP, was recognized as Kentucky Nurse Practitioner Advocate of the Year at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) 2016 National Conference in San Antonio, Texas, June 20-25. The award recognizes substantial leadership in APRN education, service to patients and policy efforts.

There are so many things we don’t yet know about the tragic shooting deaths this week of two black men in Louisiana and Minnesota, now compounded by the horrific killing and wounding of 12 police officers in Dallas. What we do know is, in so many respects, of little comfort. We are enveloped by a numbing sensation, overwhelming confusion and sadness. So many of us feel a fatiguing familiarity to all of this senseless and incomprehensible violence.

  After countless hours of hard work and dedication to a new mastery comes a new nursing credential, and with those letters comes a new annual educational requirement set by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA), certifies and recognizes individual nurses and health care organizations in addition those that provide continuing nursing education.
