AACN Members Endorse Resolution Calling for Smoke- and Tobacco-Free Schools of Nursing

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 19, 2016 – The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) is pleased to announce that the deans of the nation’s baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs have endorsed a resolution calling for smoke-free college campuses. This call to action was issued to mobilize support among nurse educators for promoting tobacco-free policies at colleges and universities nationwide in an effort to promote healthy behaviors and save lives.  

Occupational and Environmental Health Nurse PhD Training Program Graduates First Student

  Dr. Sharon Hunsucker is the first PhD graduate of the Occupational and Environmental Health Nurse (OEHN) PhD Training Program at the UK College of Nursing. The program is funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as one of the core training programs of the Central Appalachian Regional Education and Research Center (CARERC). Dr. Hunsucker successfully defended her dissertation, “Effects of Obesity on Work Ability in U.S. Farmers: A Pilot Study” on April 7, 2016.

Annual Student Scholarship Showcase to be Hosted Alongside Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Spring Conference

  The UK College of Nursing will host its annual Student Scholarship Showcase alongside the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Spring Conference from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on April 21, 2016 at the Lexington Convention Center. “This is an amazing opportunity for research and scholarship within the College of Nursing to be highly visible among other health colleges,” said Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.

  By Elizabeth Adams Five weeks at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center seemed like an eternity for bone marrow transplant recipient Earl Harris. Two days after he started the treatment, his 91-year-old mother died, and the demands of the transplantation process meant he couldn’t attend her funeral. As days of inpatient treatment turned into weeks, the bus driver who transports special needs children to school in Jefferson County was anxious to return to his bus route — and his golf clubs.

  The questions we face in confronting complex care, chronic illness, and intractable health challenges require a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinicians, researchers, and care givers with diverse backgrounds and expertise. The UK Center for Interprofessional Health Education (IPE), led by Director Jim Norton, prepares students for collaboration with other disciplines in real-world health care environments, and develops team-oriented faculty committed to improving health care delivery.

Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr Visits UK College of Nursing

  Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr visited the UK College of Nursing to learn more about its efforts in advancing Kentucky's nursing workforce and nursing science on Tues., April 5. Congressman Barr met with Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing, as well as Dr. Pat Howard, executive vice dean of academic affairs and partnerships, and toured the third floor undergraduate nursing lounge and the Clinical Simulation and Learning Center.
