Annual Student Scholarship Showcase to be Hosted Alongside Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Spring Conference

  The UK College of Nursing will host its annual Student Scholarship Showcase alongside the Center for Clinical and Translational Sciences Spring Conference from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on April 21, 2016 at the Lexington Convention Center. “This is an amazing opportunity for research and scholarship within the College of Nursing to be highly visible among other health colleges,” said Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing.

  By Elizabeth Adams Five weeks at the University of Kentucky Markey Cancer Center seemed like an eternity for bone marrow transplant recipient Earl Harris. Two days after he started the treatment, his 91-year-old mother died, and the demands of the transplantation process meant he couldn’t attend her funeral. As days of inpatient treatment turned into weeks, the bus driver who transports special needs children to school in Jefferson County was anxious to return to his bus route — and his golf clubs.

Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr Visits UK College of Nursing

  Kentucky Congressman Andy Barr visited the UK College of Nursing to learn more about its efforts in advancing Kentucky's nursing workforce and nursing science on Tues., April 5. Congressman Barr met with Dr. Janie Heath, dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing, as well as Dr. Pat Howard, executive vice dean of academic affairs and partnerships, and toured the third floor undergraduate nursing lounge and the Clinical Simulation and Learning Center.

Nursing Professor's Study of Anti-Tobacco Campaign Underscores Power of Community Action

An anti-smoking intervention implemented and studied by University of Kentucky College of Nursing assistant professor Amanda Fallin recently proved effective in counteracting pro-tobacco promotions and ending the presence of free or low-cost tobacco products in LGBT social venues.   In San Jose, California, where a statewide smoke-free law prohibits lighting up in bars, tobacco companies targeted members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community by infiltrating LBGT social venues from 2013 to 2015.     

College of Nursing Professor Featured in RCTF Annual Report for Tobacco Control Research

Recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty is an integral part of the mission of the University of Kentucky's Research Challenge Trust Fund, and each year the university highlights four outstanding endowed chairs and professors. This year's annual report, approved by the UK Board of Trustees Feb. 19, featured Ellen J. Hahn, the Marcia A. Dake Professor of Nursing.

College of Nursing Assistant Research Professor and UK Student Help Launch Citywide Substance Abuse Resource

When an individual with a substance abuse disorder reaches out for help, the opportunity for intervention is transient. “That moment when somebody is willing to go to treatment is actually a very fleeting moment in time,” said Alex Elswick, a University of Kentucky graduate student who is in long-term recovery from heroin addiction.
