Office for Institutional Diversity Celebrates 45 Years of Supporting Underrepresented Students

First DNP Program in Nation Holds First DNP Faculty Conference in Region

Wethington Building.

Two College of Nursing Students Selected as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars

  College of Nursing PhD students Jessica Harman, BSN, RN, CCRN and Sara Duggan, BSN, RN, TNCC, were selected by Susan Frazier, PhD, RN, FAHA associate professor and PhD program director, as Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Future of Nursing Scholars for the next three years. The Foundation’s award of $150,000 will support the tuition, stipend, living expenses and fees for the two scholars who will begin their PhD programs in September 2016.

Sisters by Birth, Sisters in Nursing

  Joanna and Mary Cho have more in common than just their parents—they’ve taken the nursing profession by storm, one already a UK graduate and one expected to enter the field with her BSN in December 2016. “She’s my partner in the crime,” says older of the two by one year, Mary, who now works for UK Chandler Hospital. Joanna currently works as a SNAP (Student Nurse Academic Practicum) intern.

New Study Examines Use of Multiple Tobacco Products in College Students

A new study co-authored by College of Nursing Professor Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN,  found that roughly 15 percent of college students who had ever used tobacco currently use more than one tobacco product. Polytobacco use (using more than one tobacco product) drives nicotine addiction and can prolong the use of tobacco products, leading to acute and chronic negative health risks such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and more.

Fran Feltner Receives 2016 Paul Mason Memorial Award

Fran Feltner, director of the University of Kentucky Center of Excellence in Rural Health (CERH) in Hazard and a College of Nursing instructor, has received the 2016 Paul Mason Memorial Award during the 68th Annual Conference of the Kentucky Public Health Association (KPHA) held in Owensboro on April 12-14. Feltner, a native of Leslie County, has worked for more than 30 years in rural health care, from serving as a nurse in clinical and hospital settings to her current role.

Eric Pope's May 2016 Pinning Ceremony Speech

  Eric Pope, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran from Shepherdsville, Kentucky, gave the May 2016 Pinning Ceremony speech. He has graciously allowed us to share it with you. My name is Eric Pope, and I am the comic relief for the May class of 2016. I’m also known as the hand-shake guy over at the hospital because I teach different handshakes to patients and their family members, which they all thoroughly enjoy.
