UK Nursing & COVID-19 series: Dr. Julie Marfell on Embracing Telehealth

In March 2021, we officially passed the one-year mark from when the pandemic hit the University of Kentucky and dramatically changed our way of life. We are taking this opportunity to look back at some of the standout stories and people in our UK College of Nursing community who stepped up and inspired us during tough times.

Clearing the Air: For more than 10 years, UK's tobacco-free policy has helped Kentuckians breathe easier

  Counting fewer and fewer cigarette butts— that’s how Ellen Hahn, PhD, RN, FAAN, first realized the University of Kentucky’s tobacco free policy was starting to work not long after it went into effect across the campus in late 2009.

UK Nurse Researcher-Led Study Shows Methods to Increase Cancer Screening Awareness in Disparate Populations

A study headed by Lovoria B. Williams, Ph.D., associate professor in the UK College of Nursing and assistant director for cancer health equity at the Markey Cancer Center, highlights the benefits of utilizing community health workers in educating racial minority populations in lung cancer screening.

UK College of Nursing commemorates Juneteenth 2021

“We recognize June 19, Juneteenth, as a holiday to serve as a historical reminder of the vestiges of oppression, racism and injustice that are still a very real and present experience for black people in America and worldwide.  Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery in the United States.  Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, African Americans were not officially freed until two years later – June 19, 1865 –which we recognize today as Juneteenth.   

Update on Fall 2021 Provisional Guarantee Admission

After further review, the University of Kentucky College of Nursing is able to offer provisional guarantee admission status to a group of students who previously received notification expressing otherwise.  An email message from Kristin Ashford,  Associate Dean of Undergraduate Faculty & Interprofessional Education Affairs for the UK College of Nursing, was sent out June 9, 2021, to all applicants who received this updated status.  A hard copy of the letter will also be mailed to each applicant. 

UK agriculture and nurse researchers’ Farmers’ Dinner Theater grows safety, mental health awareness in rural Kentucky

  Rural young Kentuckians will have the opportunity to explore their artistic skills while learning about farm safety and mental health through Farmers’ Dinner Theater, a partnership between the University of Kentucky College Nursing and the UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

Dr. Hartley Feld receives 2021 UKHC-UKCON Academic-Clinical Engagement Award

UK Nursing's Dr. Linares named 2021 Cultural Changemaker by United States Breastfeeding Committee

New RUHRC brief shows trends in Medicare-Paid Naloxone in Rural vs. Metropolitan Areas

The Rural & Underserved Health Research Center (RUHRC) has published a new brief, "Medicare-Paid Naloxone: Trends in Non-Metropolitan and Metropolitan Areas."   Download the brief here  Figure 1 (below):  Medicare-paid naloxone dispensing rate per 1,000 enrollees in Medicare Part D in non-metropolitan and metropolitan areas in the U.S., 2015-2018.   Some key findings from this brief include:

Congratulations to the University of Kentucky College of Nursing's Misook Chung PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN  for receiving the 2021 Global Korean Nursing Foundation's (DHKF)-USA Duck Hee Kang Mentor award.
