Great American Smokeout, Lung Cancer Awareness Month Q&A with Dr. Melinda Ickes

  November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Each year, the American Cancer Society names the third Thursday of the month as The Great American Smokeout – a day to encourage people who smoke across the country take the first step toward a healthier life.

UK Nursing's Dr. Ellen Hahn receives prestigious 2021 Faye Glenn Abdellah Leadership Award

For over a decade, nurse researchers with UK College of Nursing’s BREATHE (Bridging Research Efforts and Advocacy Toward Healthy Environments) team have been changing the landscape for treating tobacco-dependent populations. This includes stepping up to create accredited training programs to teach providers how to effectively treat tobacco dependence.

  In honor of Veterans Day, the UK College of Nursing recognizes a student who’s not only served in the Air Force, but who’s goal after graduation is to aid fighters and veterans. Originally from Las Vegas, NV, Kyle Herzberg served for eight years in the Air Force as a Russian cryptological language analyst and is currently in the College’s Accelerated BSN program.

Office of Nursing Research releases 2020-2021 Annual Report

DNP student Ben Hughes manages school, full-time job amidst COVID-19 pandemic

Ben Hughes, BSN, RN, is one of a handful of UK HealthCare professionals who manages a full-time job and family responsibilities while also pursuing his DNP Executive Leadership degree at the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. He has been able to excel at his job and schoolwork in a year when the COVID-19 pandemic put extreme pressure on those in the medical field—and especially those in care environments with a high volume of coronavirus patients.

Meet senior BSN student and ROTC cadet Maggie Nosek

Maggie Nosek, senior BSN student and U.S. Army ROTC cadet, knew she wanted to become a nurse after experiencing a collapsed lung and the subsequent partial removal of her lung prior to college. Nosek feels at home in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing because she values the program’s holistic approach and the personalized care instructors take to ensure student success.

Parents are 'Proud Our Daughters are Doing Their Part' in Vaccine Research Trial

Moderna’s KidCOVE trial is currently underway to test the dosage and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 6 months through 11 years old. The University of Kentucky is one of the 90 sites in the U.S. participating in the study, with 200 children from across the Commonwealth enrolled.

Oped: Help increase healthcare access for Kentuckians by supporting nurse practitioners

We, as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN) and health care providers, would like to increase access to health care for all residents of the Commonwealth. There are over 9,000 Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN’s) who are nurse practitioners and nurse midwives licensed in the state of Kentucky.  APRN’s provide primary care, specialty care and hospital care to thousands of Kentuckians daily. And we do it very well.
