Recent Nursing and Medicine Alumni Get Married and Embark on Adventure of a Lifetime

  The first thing Christa and Jon David (JD) Hammer saw after they landed in Los Angeles International Airport and before they embarked on their journey along the West Coast was the inside of an ambulance. The catch? The ambulance was turned into a camper, and the couple drove it around California from Los Angeles to Yosemite, then down the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to San Diego. Christa and JD visited family in Redondo Beach and fulfilled a dream of hiking Half Dome in Yosemite.

College of Nursing Students Participate in 10th Year of Shoulder to Shoulder Global Brigades

  Five University of Kentucky College of Nursing students traveled to Santo Domingo, Ecuador, through Shoulder to Shoulder Global (STSG), an official campus organization celebrating ten years of engaging academic and community partners in improving the health and well-being of impoverished and underserved communities.

Following Father's Example, UK Nursing Student Donates a Kidney to Save a Life

  To commit a textbook term to memory, UK College of Nursing student Karly Schmidt used a mental shortcut by naming her two kidneys George and Fred. George, her right kidney, reminded her of the word “glomerular,” and Fred, her left kidney, reminded her of “filtration.” Putting the two words together, she could recall the glomerular filtration rate, which is the medical formula used to measure kidney function.

Every academic year, the College hosts several distinguished nurse leaders and sends faculty, staff and students to conferences, presentations and other events in the U.S. and around the world. Working behind the scenes to get them to their destinations is this year’s Employee of the Year and Gloe L. Bertram award winner, Kevin Garland, College of Nursing travel and purchasing coordinator.

WellCare Announces $80,000 in College of Nursing Scholarships Aimed at Improving Rural Health

  Recognizing the need for quality primary care in rural areas of the Commonwealth, WellCare of Kentucky, a subsidiary of WellCare Health Plans, Inc. will provide $80,000 to fund scholarships for the University of Kentucky College of Nursing aimed at increasing the number of nurses working in primary medicine and psychiatry in Eastern Kentucky. WellCare, in conjunction with the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and College of Nursing, will fund up to 30 scholarships valued at $180,000 for medical and nursing students at various stages of their studies.

College of Nursing Celebrates Homecoming of UK Honor Flight Veterans, Major (RET.) Richard Krolikoski, BSN, 1976 Alumnus

  On Saturday, May 20, UK became the first university in the nation to sponsor an Honor Flight, sending nearly 70 veterans on an all-expense paid trip to visit memorials in Washington, D.C. Many of the veterans on the flight are affiliated with UK, including alumni, retirees and family members of current UK faculty and staff.
