Step back in time to 2014. The College of Nursing was in the middle of searching for a dean. The College’s Interim Dean, Patricia B. Howard, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, was negotiating with Norton Healthcare to expand the College’s DNP Program to five cohorts of Norton’s baccalaureate staff nurses. The demand for nursing education—especially post-master’s level certificate programs—was steadily rising.

If You Have Diabetes, Education is Essential for Optimal Health

Diabetes is one of the most common chronic conditions, affecting more than 30 million people in the United States. About 5 percent of people with diabetes have type 1. Type 2 is more common and occurs in about 95 percent of those with diabetes. If you are a woman with a history of gestational diabetes during pregnancy, your risk of developing type 2 as you age is 40 percent to 60 percent, and the risk increases to 50 percent to 75 percent if you are obese.

Student Spotlight: Gabbie Innocent, BSN Student

  Originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky, Gabbie Innocent, a sophomore in the traditional BSN program, always craved adrenaline. Her intent was to pursue a career as a paramedic, but she found shortly after coming to UK that nursing not only offers the same rush, but also a different experience every day—a break from the normal routine. “I just knew an everyday job wasn’t for me ever since I was young. But I knew I wanted to do something medical and help others,” explains Innocent.

Associate Professor Dr. Gia Mudd-Martin Inducted as Fellow of the American Heart Association

Associate Professor Gia Mudd-Martin, PhD, MPH, RN, was inducted as a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA) during the annual American Heart Association Scientific Sessions in Anaheim, California. 

Dr. Kristin Ashford Receives $600,000 Rita & Alex Hillman Foundation Innovation Award

  For her work in addressing the opioid epidemic and its impact on maternal-fetal health, Kristin Ashford, associate professor and associate dean of Undergraduate Faculty Affairs in the University of Kentucky College of Nursing, has been awarded the Hillman Innovations in Care Program grant from the Rita and Alex Hillman Foundation.

UK College of Nursing, UK HealthCare Host 27th Annual Nursing Research Papers Day

  UK HealthCare and the UK College of Nursing showcased the work of nurses and students at the 27th annual Nursing Research Papers Day at the Hilton Downtown on Friday, November 10, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. The theme for this year’s showcase was “Bring the Science to Life: Innovations in Nursing Research.” Nationally known nurse scientist Gail Stern, MSN, PMHCNS-BC, served as the keynote speaker.  Undergraduate Podium presentations:

College of Nursing Inducts Five Distinguished Nurse Leaders into Hall of Fame

Three UK Nurses Receive Florence Nightingale Award in Nursing

  Kristin Ashford, PhD, WHNP-BC, FAAN, Gwen Moreland, DNP, RN, NE-BC and Carol Wright (UK CON alum) were among six nurse leaders awarded the University of Louisville School of Nursing Nightingale Award on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at the Mellwood Arts Center. The award recognizes Registered Nurses (RNs) who excel in providing patient care, impact the profession of nursing and/or improve the overall health of citizens living in Kentucky or Southern Indiana through practice, teaching, research and/or service.

College of Nursing Students Trick-or-Treat with Kentucky Children's Hospital, Shriners Hospital Patients

Prenursing students in the UK Lewis Honors College, Scholars in Nursing Pathway participated in the UK Children's and Shriners Hospitals reverse trick-or-treat for Halloween. Many UK students and employees attended the event and provided treats for children hospitalized during the Halloween season. Dr. Fran Hardin-Fanning led and organized this volunteer project. Samantha Mattern and Adelaide Brunton are pictured above at at Shriners Hospital.
