UK Nursing Professor Earns Distinction as Fellow of the AANP

University of Kentucky College of Nursing professor Sharon Lock was one of four Kentucky nurse practitioners recently inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANPs).

The College of Nursing Appoints its First Director of Diversity And Inclusion

Associate Professor Jenna Hatcher, RN, PhD, MPH has accepted a new leaders​hip position to help the College improve the culture of its community and the quality of its programs as the first Director of Diversity and Inclusion. In this new role Dr. Hatcher will work closely with the UK Office of Institutional Diversity to ensure that diversity and inclusion are fully implemented in the College's strategic plan, classrooms and  community. She will also help the College of Nursing acknowledge and celebrate the differences in our community.​

Professor Amanda Fallin's Op-ed about Opioid Overdose Prevention

Professor Amanda Fallin and Clinical Associate Professor Patricia Freeman in the College of Pharmacy had an op-ed published in the Lexington Herald-Leader about the need for pharmacists to receive training in the use of naloxone for opioid overdose prevention and apply for certification from the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy in order help fight Kentucky’s deadly opioid epidemic. Professor Ellen Hahn and Dean Janie Heath penned an op-ed that was featured in the Louisville Courier-Journal, and the Lexington Herald-Leader. The piece was written in response to a CDC report that admonished South Carolina, Texas and Kentucky for failing to provide enough money from tobacco tax revenue for tobacco prevention efforts.

When Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN, APRN, had her first child six years ago, she left the hospital puzzled by many aspects of the experience. Primarily, as a healthy young woman giving birth to a healthy baby, why had she been treated throughout her stay as though she were unwell? “I felt like I was a heart patient, with all the rules applicable to a sick person,” says Dr. Dekker, who conducts cardiovascular research nursing at the University of Kentucky’s College of Nursing.  

First Class of Advanced Practice Nurses Complete Certificate Program through UK-Norton Healthcare Academic Partnership

7/6/2015 – The UK College of Nursing and Louisville’s Norton Healthcare celebrated the first class of board certified nurse practitioners to complete additional competency-based education through a landmark academic-practice partnership on July 1 2015. The UK College of Nursing‐Norton Healthcare Academic Partnership allows Norton Healthcare nurses with a bachelor’s degree in nursing the opportunity to earn their Doctor of Nursing Practice degree, Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification or Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner certification.

College of Nursing Faculty Member Testifies on Capitol Hill​​

University of Kentucky College of Nursing Professor Sheila D. Melander, PhD, APRN, ACNP-BC, FCCM, FAANP and president of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), presented testimony to the Institute of Medicine’s (IOM) Committee for the Evaluation of the Impact of the Institute of Medicine Report: The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, on May 28 in Washington.

Congratulations to our Class of 2015 Graduates!

Ninety students received their BSNs and received their nursing pins, which represent their readiness to enter the noblest profession. Of our 90 BSN graduates, 55 graduated with honors. After passing the NCLEX the BSN graduates will join more than 3.2 million nurses who are working at the nexus of art and science; the art of managing the care of a multitude of individuals from a host of backgrounds applying competent and compassionate care which will enable so many to live longer, stronger, and healthier lives.
